French style for family living

by Sharon Santoni
There is a trend in France, that has caught on fast with the young and not so young.  It ties in with brocante, and vintage and the industrial look. It is all about comfortable living, about being elegant while keeping it simple, about more for less; about enjoying but not flaunting …
let’s just say that it is French ….

This home was featured recently in Journal de la Maison, and typifies this fashionable approach.  Using vintage furniture,  having fun and looking young.

There are few rules, vintage and even antique can be mixed with industrial.  Colour palettes are dark and neutral.   Wood is often painted, metal is often stripped.

What do you think?  Is this a style you would happily move into, or does it look too staged?   Does it maybe look too French?!  Do you long for a softer look, with a few more frills?

I know how I feel on the subject , but I’d love to know what you think…

I think that style is all around right now, certainly here in the US. The look is somewhat different, because of what's available at flea markets, etc., but the idea is the same. Reuse, recycle, simple, less is more, etc. I like the look, and I think it's a noble idea, but I like a more comfort and visual lushness.

I would love the style for a studio. It is not my taste for a home environment. It feels too austere.

I think the French have a keen sense of antiquity and old world charm. I'm glad to see the younger generation find a way to keep it going. The remarkable thing about these rooms is that though they have modern elements, they still look ancient and very cottage! Love it!

I love the table in the first image so much better than having a desk.
My desk was made by hand by a man out in the Argentine countryside but it doesn't have the grace that I would like. somewhere in my next home, we will see about a desk like that here 🙂

I think the phrase "more for less" says it all. To me the look is cluttered and overdone with brocante-finds that have little visual cohesion. Give me a comfortable, not hard-edged, underfurnished room, like many you have featured in the past.

Une petite pointe d'industriel peut être charmante dans plusieurs style,un lustre à Pampilles sur une table de ferme et des chaises Tolix ,c'est un petit bout de chez moi.

Merci pour le lien.
Belle fin de journée

My favorite is the kitchen! But I love it all.
I like the quirky feel! Seeing the unexpected used in unique ways is clever indeed!

Yes, as your first commenter said, this has been going on in the states for quite some time. Too industrial for me, but fun for younger folks. One magazine espousing this trend is https://fleamarketstylemag.blogspot.com

I think that this look is very 'cool' but unfortunately I am not! I can totally appreciate it, and I can imagine my son perhaps growing up to live in an apartment like this. It seems very masculine and a bit 'techy'. However, there are some elements that I love, such as the chest full of labelled drawers and the faded, time-worn patina on everything. Personally, it's not comfortable and 'squishy' or 'floaty' enough for me. I need cushions, and fabrics and softness and a few pretty lights – but perhaps that's just my age – lol! Paula x

It looks a little too industrial for my taste. Hard edges, not much comfort. I prefer softer, a little more feminine. But I love the whimsy of the look.

Absolutely love it! Just bought some vintage shop lockers from an auction at my old Junior High School in Iowa – so exicted to put them in my closet/mudroom. Love the mix of metal and wood. I have a old narrow harvest table with the Marais metal chairs which I absolutely love.

Love your blog by the way. I just stumbled across it. -especially love the posts about your dogs – we have 4 English Springer Spaniels.

I rather like the photos. I am in love the chest of labelled drawers and the kitchen table and chairs. There are a lot of elements in these photos that I like… even the industrial pieces but only in small amounts. I wouldn't want an entire house of it. I think the French have a wonderful sense of style. Even the mixing the industrial pieces seems to mix in well with the worn, faded and rustic look. I personally love the patina that comes with old items… old french letters, tarnished silverware, worn textiles and old religious statues and medals.

I like some of it. The rule of thumb with any theme is to use a few pieces in a room. When we add too-much-of-a-good-thing, it looks staged.
Industrial looks best with other pieces that are textured – like a fabulous velvet cushion, or nubby rug. It balances the look.

The French Industrial trend is very stong here in America via Restoration Hardware. My husband and I are presently integrating the look into our home with a few accent pieces.

Your blog is one of my favorite design inspirations. I love your French girlfriends series.

I love this look so much that my friend and I are starting a business selling items like this, but with a bit of a softer edge. Think this look but lighter, with linen and paper mixed in.

I fear that this style doesn't appeal to me at all, it looks cold, uncomfortable and uninviting – sorry about that:) I prefer a softer more rural look though I don't particularly want lots of frills and furbelows – I do want a few comfortable chairs to sit on though!

I love all the photos.

I have to say, I appreciate mid century modern design and industrial design. I'm at the age in my life where older family members are passing away and leaving me antiques. I can't part with the antiques b/c of obvious reasons, so I mix them with my love of modern. It's a mix that I find a lot of my friends in my age range- 30's are beginning to do. They're collecting from their family members and buying what they can afford piece by piece of industrial, modern design. When done correctly, it can look great!

Great photos – especially the kitchen – but have to be careful not to over-do it! I feel this look can sometimes look a little too contrived – a room still has to be lived in and feel comfortable. Love the colours. Have a lovely day Francesca

Nothing could look too french! And now I know what to do with all the wine corks, what a great lamp..

For me it looks 'staged', set-up for the magazine shot. And, sorry, to be honest, not particularly French.
An industrial interior look which is international since a few years, although the tolix chairs are French.

But all in all- interesting!

I am afraid the "French" look combining industrial-modern with vintage has been in Seattle WA for quite sometime. We have been using vintage/reclaimed wood and combining with metal for indoor/outdoor furniture for the past 6-7 years.

I love the photos but in my experience (I live in France) – its not how French people decorate their homes ordinarily – if they are interior designers they might. I try to have a blend of new and old to soften it. I go to lots of brocantes (2nd hand markets) in France looking for great pieces – and I find them! French people really are recyclers of great talent there's a lot of make do and mend – a coat of paint, a bit of carpentry, some lovely old fabrics to change a look and bring it up to date, although I'm a Londoner – its affecting my outlook too https://www.thegoodlifefrance.com/my-french-life-im-becoming-more-french-i-recycle-like-a-crazy-woman/

I'm not much for 'frills'. I do think 'less' is more. I love mixing old w/new…lots of wood and a recent fav is galvanized. I want my 'things' to also be functional…not dust collectors (an exception is anything 'sheepy'). I wish I could find vintage feedsacks!

After years of living will frills (I tend to accumulate them, evidently), I'm leaning toward a much more clean, bare and spare look myself. So this appeals to me a great deal. I would need to soften those chairs with some pillows, though…ow!

First, I must tell you how much I enjoy your blog. I love various cultures. As far as the cold metal goes, I think it's well, cold. I prefer warm – some rich colours and a soft seat.
Just letting you know – Oh, I loved yesterdays little day dream.
Thank you for all you do,

This looks like a college kid's first apartment to me. It reminds me of the concrete block and board book cases we used to use because we had no money. While it's serviceable, it's not a look I'd intentionally try to achieve.

Hi Sharon! This look is all the rage here in the US…'industrial strength' as I call it mixed with a few traditional treasures…kind of the yin and the yang of furnishings. It will grow on me and just about when I am liking it…poof …onto something else…design style and fashion…ever-changing!
Bon Journee' a Paris!

The mixed industrial/New York loft-ish look is interesting, but a bit too sparse for me; I need a little more softness and a lot more color. I lean more toward a mixed Rachel Ashwell look…"comfort, function and beauty" (and I have to love it).
