food from the south – la tarte tropezienne

[blank]We rarely eat a dessert that isn’t home baked, but when visiting the south of france
an exception has to be made for  …… la tarte tropezienne  YUM![blank]
[blank]The lightest of brioche, cut in half and filled with a creme patissiere, delicately perfumed with orange flower.

This is  a dessert to collect from a good bakers, early in the morning
when the streets smell of freshly baked bread

This is a dessert to share with friends after a long lunch enjoyed in the shade.
A dessert to round off  a meal before moving onto coffee and a siesta.[blank]
[blank]This is a dessert that to me means summer, it means the south of France and of course it means St Tropez.
And most of all it means being on holiday and not having to worry about cooking desserts!

Summer on California's Central Coast mean Santa Maria BBQ: grilled Tri-tip, cowboy beans, garlic bread and salad. Also, tomatoes, warm from the vine, sliced and drizzled in olive oil and balsalmic vinegar, with fresh cracked pepper. Add some fresh basil, if you wanna get fancy. Add a chilled glass of local wine, and put your feet up. Aaaah!

Doesn't this look delectable. Maybe I wouldn't share. Some of my favourites are Summer Pudding straight from the fridge, or maybe a lovely light lemon cheesecake, then again I do always enjoy some homemade icecream with strawberries, of course devonshire teas (scones jam and cream) just spells summer wherever you have them.

I had one of those delicious deserts when i was in St. Tropez last year. I was amazing, i could not make it if i tried, your flour and sugar and cream is so much better than i can find here in California. Cant wait till i have another one. Dishes I associate with summer holidays: freshly-squeezed lemonade; freshly-picked raspberries and huckleberries; sliced peaches with freshly-picked blueberries; other fresh stonefruits; salade caprèse, Greek salad and anything with freshly-picked tomatoes; fresh corn; grilled, marinated flank steak; ice-cold watermelon. Simple, fresh, light summer food!

In my neck of the woods, the desserts for summer are homemade shortcake with freshly picked strawberries early in the season. Then we move on to homemade peach ice cream (and peach pie or tarts)….I also can up some preserves. Then it's on to (usually wild) blackberry cobbler. In early September my apples are ready and I can't wait for some apple tarts (and I may try to can some applesauce this year).

Here in the deep south of the United States it is strawberry shortcake. Our recipe for the cake is dense, more like a scone or biscuit and not so sweet, we let the whipped cream give us the sweet taste, yummy!

Looks fantastic! Next time I am in France I must try it! I wonder if they sell it in Paris? Although a reason to travel south is always needed!

I was told by a patissier in Saint Rafael on the Cote d'Azur that this tarte was made by the Polish mother of a patissier in Saint Tropez…..and it took off from there! As you know, the French don't really have 'cake' in the same way that the Eastern Europeans / Germans do. Only in the last few years have we seen it in the Paris/Normandy area, and very rarely at that. The cake version I had in Saint Rafael – and only recently had the brioche. I've never seen anything resembling a flaky biscuit over here in France (is there one?) I know about biscuits because my mother was from Kentucky!

And in the mornings, simple mango smoothies: mango, milk, and plain yogurt; that's all.
