staying in Provence….. a 17th century bastide for rent

by Sharon Santoni

provencal bastide

While in Provence this summer, we visited friends in their beautiful 17th bastide, and when I discovered that they occasionally let their house, in the month of August,  I thought you would like to know about it.

a place to stay in Provence - my french country home

This beautiful property is just 10 minutes from Aix en Provence, and yet firmly in the countryside.

The garden is generous and surrounded by vineyards, the view from the house and from the pool is over endless grape country and across towards Aix and the blue mountains beyond.

Being so close to Aix makes it easy to pop into the market, or to eat out in the evening, but frankly if I were here, I think I’d just stay put!

The interior of the house is very French, very elegant but without bling.   It is comfortable without being luxurious.  The rooms are huge, with high ceilings and stone, or antique terracotta floors.

It is furnished throughout with a mix of antique furniture, comfortable beds and loads of books.

The kitchen is big and simple, with light streaming in through the windows.  There are four bedrooms, one elegant bathroom and three simple shower rooms.

Outside dining is divine with the stone barbecue and iron table  under a grape vine, and in the shade of a huge fig tree.  Warm in the evenings and cool in the shade, away from the midday sun.

evening dining al fresco under the vine

The surrounding countryside is mostly vineyards and small towns or villages, it makes for great cycling country, and I hear that bikes are easy to rent close by.  You could even cycle to the vineyard that makes wine from the grapes on the property

If you are interested in renting this bastide, the best thing is to check with the website homeholidays.com from next May, the house will be available for next August…… happy planning!

Sharon, the only problem is that I think I would never, ever want to leave. Beautiful. I can’t imagine a more lovely place to soak up summer and the bounty of Provence. Thanks for the tip! XOXO

We cannot find the link to contact the people who own the Bastide. Could you email me the link or information? We are very interested in renting it next summer.

Thank you so much. LOVE your blog. It reminds me how much I love the countryside of France as well as Paris!!!

Gorgeous villa! Last summer the entire family (20 of us!) visited Italy. I have already sent an email to everyone, linking this post, suggesting we do it again, this time in France!

Sigh…. I don’t think I would want to leave, either…..

Thanks, Sharon!

Aix is one of my favourite places in Provence! I have hopes that my son will study abroad there one day which will give me the perfect excuse to spend more time there 🙂
