christmas flowers – red and black

by Sharon Santoni

red roses arranged for a christmas bouquet

I thought it would be fun to put together some ideas for flowers around the house for the holidays.  You know how much I love to have flowers everywhere, be it single blooms in a glass or large generous bouquets, they are my finishing touch to a welcoming home.

As much as possible I use flowers from the garden, and as you can imagine at this time of year choice is limited.   So I tend to buy a few flowers from the florist and hunt around the garden for the foliage to accompany.

Today is the first Christmas bouquet, I shall try and show you two more at least before the big day.   This bouquet is very traditional colours for the festive season.  These deep red roses are velvety and luxurious and look fantastic teamed with the dark holly and box leaves, and the grey green berries from our huge ivy.

I arranged them on the three tiered cake stand that I have used here before, you may remember that I displayed summer roses and peonies  in the same way last June.  It is simple to layer the plates  and place a block of florists foam on each.

Voila!   Deep reds and greens for you this Sunday …. what colours shall I use next week?

Beautiful combination of roses and greens from your garden. I would love to see white roses with peach centers and combined with Paperwhites for a Christmas bouquet.

So pretty! I have some Holly bushes that I’m going to try to use with red roses for the holidays along with other greens.

How beautiful! Love your flower arrangement
. I live in a very hot area so do not get many greens, like your ivy. Happy Holidays! Love your blog

Just stunning! I love the combination you put together and I’m especially fascinated with the beautiful gray/green berries that came from your ivy. I’ve never seen ivy with berries. Can you tell me the name of it, please – I’d love to have some!

Hi Sharon, it’s 8.25 Monday morning I woke up at 5.00 am to the sound of thunder, this has been going for days and destroying all the flowers….I object. So your bouquet this morning is a lovely way to start the day. We have a beautiful English Holly tree in the front yard in Spring it’s berries turn red, you should see the birds having a feast…absolutely beautiful. How about Lilac for your next bouquet? Thank you for sharing beauty. Till next time Regards Esther from Sydney. PS yesterday the thunder was so loud it shook the house and we thought it was the start of an earthquake, I can’t remember a storm like this…ever.

HOLY CHRISTMAS! Absolutely beautiful. The combination of the frosty candles and the shade of red roses is so festive. I also like the dark contrast of the candlestick and the dark plate holder. The berries are the finishing touch. Wish I was coming for dinner!

… these are beautiful shots Sharon … next? Maybe a peach with a few lighter green leaves … I think nature looks wonderful no matter what colors you pick.

And I’m looking forward to the Orange Marmalade post … I bought some lately … the Bonne Maman brand and thought the Orange wasn’t as strong as it should be. On the hunt now for a new brand. xo
