staying in the south of france – le mas de la rose

With many people planning their spring and summer breaks right now, I thought you may like to hear about a hotel I stayed in last year in the south of France,  and absolutely loved.

Le Mas de la Rose is ideally situated for visiting Avignon, Aix, and St Remy, while enjoying the calm of the countryside.  When I was there in October, I was with a client buying brocante and we found it a great spot for driving to various fairs and dealers.

The beautiful hotel was originally built in the 17th century as  farm buildings and  barns.  The soft colours of the stonework, surrounded by olive trees and fields of lavender are a perfect fit to the ideal Provençal property.

The grounds are extensive and very well maintained by a team of gardeners.   The area nearest the hotel’s restaurant is given over to a large potager which produces organic vegetables for the resident chef.

Guests are greeted by Fabienne Huppert, the tall and elegant French lady who owns and runs the hotel.  She and her staff are always on hand to keep their clients happy, be it tea in one of the sitting rooms, cold drinks by the pool or champagne on the terrace.

My visit in the fall was for work, but the calm and peaceful surroundings were wonderful to return to at the end of a long day, and the beauty of the grounds, especially in the morning mist, magically wiped out any fatigue.

The breakfasts were quite delicious, and in the evening, we either ate at the restaurant at the hotel, or made the short drive to Eygalières, where there were plenty of alternatives to choose from.

I certainly hope to go back here one day, not for work, but just to enjoy the area and make the most of  a totally relaxing stay.

So beautiful , we stayed for a week in a great rustic apartment in L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue when we visited France in 2011 and we absolutely loved Provence and all the little towns. So natural and reasonably untouched. We had a car and wandered each day through beautiful, countryside. Amazing markets, history, art, food and wine…magical area and pat his hotel would be a perfect base. Some days ….We would buy baguette for breakfast and then fill the rest with fresh produce and make our picnic lunch and stop wherever we desired in the valleys. Must return….my favourite place outside Australia.

What a stunning place…..I can almost smell the scent of the heavenly flowers, it is all so beautiful. I would love to be there now instead of here in NY bracing for a historic blizzard heading our way!

Ah, you were SO close and yet so far! 😉 But I am so glad that you featured the Mas de la Rose. There are, unfortunately, quite a few tourist traps in this beautiful region – or at least a lot of places where service is not as important as the Euros that are being earned! This hotel has always had a great reputation.

Now we just need to get you back down here so we can meet…

Sharon, it looks beautiful!
My husband and I are coming from Canada to explore Normandy in late April (actually visiting our son in Antwerp, Belgium where he’s on University exchange.) Do you still offer your guest cottage for rent? If so, can I get further details from you? I would so much love to stay at your guest cottage for a night or two if possible.
Kind regards, Lynne

I just love your site, newsletter and fabulous posts! Such great insights into French culture and style….there is really nothing to compare! Visited France several times and would love to invest in a small place for summer vacations in a country setting.
