repeat flowers, repeat flowers, repeat flowers, repeat …..

repeat pattern of flowers arranged on cloth

I have been researching antique indigo textiles for a piece I’d like to run on the blog in July, and I’ve looked at so many beautiful  images, and handled so many stunning textiles that I seem to have managed to get  repeat flower patterns on my brain.

I’m particularly taken with the depth of colour in the old fabrics, and the subtle balance between faded pattern and deep natural dye.

So just for fun today I had a little ‘repeat flower’ photo session.  Laying out groups of poppy heads, white and pink roses, mahonia berries and the tiny white flowers of a plant that grows everywhere here, and who is sometimes called camomile; although between you and me I don’t think that’s what it is.

The background fabric is an antique heavy linen sheet that I dyed and often use for table settings …

and once again this morning, it occured to me that one of the things I love so much about blogging is the way it gives me a licence to procrastinate and play around with ‘pretty’, instead of ticking off the to-do list for the day.

So creative! The blue and white flowers in the third photo from the bottom would make a gorgeous design for a fabric!

Absolutely beautiful. In the Northeast USA our flowers are thin and few, we have heard about sunshine but it is rare to capture this season. Fabric design probably starts just this way for some artists! Great idea. Thanks for sharing.

Few years ago, A friend asked me early morning for nice table bouquet, bridal shower for her son and lady, they liked nice but quirky things too. I used concord grapes, dill, roses and day lilly (opened after it was on table). All in walk around my then well tended garden. Really pretty.

I think you should design floral fabrics! It’s time they come back into style again. With your talent they would be incredible. The little white flower is a type of feverfew.

Beautiful as always, the white flower is Feverfew, my is blooming now, & it dries well for bouquets. Would love to see French Lavender talked about.

I’m sure someone else has come up with the idea of turning these beautiful flowers and photos into gorgeous textiles. It would be stunning but then everything you do is stunning Sharon. X

Beautiful idea Sharon! As you say, what better way to spend the morning than by being creative for your blog! I bought a lovely old embroidered French linen sheet for our bed – gorgeous. But hadn’t thought of getting a plain one and dying it…..Hmmmmm. Such an inspiration! Thank you for sharing.

Hello Sharon,

Your blog is always so very lovely, I look forward to seeing your post in my inbox.

I absolutely LOVE the linen sheet that you dyed, and the various flower arrangements on it. I would love to see you produce the solid fabric, the blue and white version, and the assorted floral version. I could definitely see doing my bedroom in these!

Keep posting! I enjoy the inspiration!

Your virtual friend,

Donna~
