the january video and how to get the look

by Sharon Santoni

small street in the town of Belleme

I am so excited and ever-so-slightly-nervous to bring you this first in depth home decor video.    We shot the film a few weeks ago, and since there has been time spent  on editing and also pulling together some ideas for those of you who are inspired by the look.

The video is available on the My French Country Home You Tube channel.

I receive a lot of emails asking for advice on authentic French home decor, so I have created these mood boards for you, with links showing where to find everything.  Whenever possible I picked antique pieces.   As disclosure I’ll add that some of the links may earn me a commission … let’s say if that happens,  I can increase my budget for the next video!

french country mood board

1. candle holders  2. sunburst mirror  3. antique french lithograph 4.  antique french lithograph 5. sofa 6.  aubusson bird cushion 7. aubusson cushion 8. small desk

We shot this video in the picture-perfect town of Belleme, about an hour from my house.   It was a cold day, but we received a warm welcome from Josiane Lenoir at the Hotel de Suhard and from several of the antique dealers in the town.  The day was spent first of all with Josiane, then a lovely lunch followed by some antique shopping – the dealers opening their doors just for us – happy days!

1. tall dresser 2.chandelier 3. still life painting 4. pillows 5. willow basket 6. rolling pins 7.wooden board 8. console table  9. fruit canning jars 10. le creuset cooking pot11. white soup tureen

As you know, these videos are a new adventure for me and the blog, and I would love to have your feedback and your ideas for what else you would like to see.   The shooting calendar is already planned for the next couple of months but I’ll be open to ideas for later in the spring.   It’s amazing how much time and planning each film takes to arrange, shoot and edit, so I’d like to think that I’m showing you the stuff you most want to see!

And if you’d like to stay updated with any new videos we create, be sure to subscribe to the YouTube channel – Merci!

Enjoyable video – thank you. Would have liked it much better without the dreadful background music though. It would be so much nicer to hear a few snippets of the actual conversations. If you do have to have a music soundtrack then just about anything would be better!

Thank you Justine, I shall bear that in mind for next time. I think the music is about the hardest thing to get right!

It is indeed and there is the copyright issue to avoid as well. There are some lovely pieces of music on this site which I have found in the past to be a royalty free treasure trove of tracks. http://www.audionetwork.com

Best of luck with your future productions!

Bra-va! Oh, my that is just a fantastic video…honestly, that dives right into the best of “the real thing” that France has to offer – and I know of what I speak as I am entering into my 15th year of living here – than I have seen in a really, really long time (I would say ‘probably ever’ but I know that you would just roll your eyes at me!). But you just nailed it…The depth of beauty, the appreciation for history, all while taking the best of the past and moving forward in a unique way.
Really looking ahead for the rest…

One small thing: Next time, leave the screen with the “thanks to” credits up a trifle longer. For those of us who read credits, it vanished far too quickly.

Wow – what fun and so well thought out, Sharon! I know that the amount of footage you shot, and the amount of editing you did must have been a huge undertaking, to end up with such a smooth and charming video. Well worth it!!

I agree about the music. To me it sounds canned and doesn’t fit the feel of the video. I guess I would prefer no music, and perhaps a bit more narration. You do have a lovely voice, so go for it!

Brilliant. Enjoyed every minute of it, even the music, though some found it off putting, I did not. Your voice has a lovely countenance to it and is the “icing on the cake” so to speak. I especially appreciated the peak into the addresses as these are the type of activities I much prefer to incorporate into my travels rather than the common landmarks so many travelers seek out. I am putting together a trip to France, along with my husband in celebration of 30 yrs of marriage, for later in the year and will most definitely be referring to your blog and videos for references, accommodations and the like. So glad to have found you and your French Country Home! Would love to stay at your lovely B & B.

I liked this video and your previous one. Thank you for all your hard work and generosity. I too, found the music distracting and would enjoy a softer melody. Also, because your accent is different from mine, I had some difficulty understanding your words. Perhaps if you slowed your speech down a bit, I and perhaps others might undertand what you are telling. I’m sorry to sound critical, I love what you are doing so please continue. Just offering my own critiques in hopes of a more enjoyable experience without distractions.

Sharon, While I enjoyed the video I too felt the music was distracting. Also, it appears the French styling and decor you are featuring is more formal. I was wondering if perhaps in a later video, would you be expressing more of a Country French look?
I look forward to seeing more and appreciate the amount of time and focus on detail, that goes into a project like this.

Hi Sharon, I really think that this video stands out from everything else you’ve done. It’s really good and I would love to see more and more of these, even if it’s just a wander around a house and a pretty village. It’s lovely to see real peoples decoration styles. I agree however about the music, it began to nag a little from about half way through, but mainly because it’s a repetitive tune and too loud in comparison to the level of your voice. If it faded into the background more it may work even with that tune. I think it is just a question of balance. Keep them coming!

I enjoyed riding along with you through the countryside and stopping at such a beautifully aged village. It was fun to see treasures revealed behind closed doors. I especially enjoyed the chandeliers made from unusual objects. I agree with other comments that it would be lovely to hear snippets of conversation. That would help draw us into the French experience. Not knowing the cost of the antiques that were shown I will suggest that you do a mix of very affordable to higher end. Thank you for taking us into places that we wouldn’t typically see. Personally, I could wander endlessly through each location and I look forward, in anticipation, to what you will share in the future.

Sharon – it’s a lovely video! I had no problem with the music at all. In fact I think a little background music is almost necessary in some places as a bridge from one location to the next. Bonjour Sharon,
I have been reading your lovely blog for some time now but am really commenting for the first time. As a French expat living in England for the past twenty years, I find your articles delightful as they often remind me of home but at the same time, allow me to appreciate through the eyes of real francophiles what I always took for granted while growing up in France.
I’ve truly enjoyed this new video (except the annoying sound track), and the elegant way you have of introducing French styles to your readers. It’s made me want to see more of the same, it’s a wonderful way to discover new addresses of beautiful antique shops and very pretty towns. I’ll certainly make a détour by Belleme next time I am holidaying in the area. Merci et bravo!

I think you did a great job, and you have a nice, pleasant voice. I did not find the music too annoying; having done a few videos myself I know the problem with picking music! I too wish you would show more of a high/low mix of objects. Not everyone can afford, or would want to buy, light fixtures that are thousands of dollars. Even though I could buy it if I wished, I am not addicted to shopping. I just like to look and enjoy. You could take us to a rural village market or cheese store and it would be just as much fun for my taste.

Sharon, congratulations on the video, lovely job. I look forward to the coming videos. I think that it is so nice that the gentleman who made the lamps was interested in the person that would take home his lamp , as if they were in effect “adopting” a dear pet. Speaking of pet a enjoyed your inclusion of the cute dog on the steps.. Wow, what a wonderful world depicted in an amazing video, so well done. Your voice is perfect and the luminous close-ups are beautiful. The music, whilst acceptable to some, would benefit from a selection which reflects the tenor and soothing quality of your voice and the beauty of the interiors (and exteriors) – whilst avoiding cliche, perhaps something even more french and mix it up a bit – a little Joe Dassin (la-lala, la-la-la-la-la-lala) or some Carla Bruni or Charlotte Gainsbourg during the no-talk spots – Oh my, everybody a director, you will find the perfect music, what a lovely challenge. The camera work is great, just some of the longer shots, eg of the sitting room on entry, whilst atmospheric, I found a little dark. This has to be your new career – your video is exactly the kind of stuff I’d love to see on TV – Sophie Dahl on cooking, Ines de la Fresange on fashion and Sharon Santoni on french interior and design. Magnifique! From an appreciative follower.

We are an American family living in Paris now for almost 4 years and I would love to get out to your neck of the woods sometime for some shopping. Bravo Bravo!!! Well done! Absolutely loved it! And to be very honest I was far too absorbed with listening to your every word, my eyes following you around so as to marvel at all those incredibly beautiful things . . . to be too interested in the music. And you fitted right in looking so very beautiful too.

Sharon,
You are an inspiration to create, take chances and grow. The video is delightful and a tonic for the icy, gray weather here. When traveling I used to look only at location and budget fit in terms of where I stayed. Increasingly my surroundings play a much larger part in my decision. I want to feel peaceful. The Hotel de Suhard will be a destination spot for me.

Lovely video Sharon! Agree that this particular music is rather distracting and a little grating. A softer background music would be better I think. It would be good to hear some of the conversations or the sounds in the room as it would enhance that feeling of being there with you. Future videos – country homes showing surrounding countryside, an old property being renovated in a series of videos – fashion video? Go for it! Looking forward to more.

As a reader who travels France vicariously via your blog, I loved your first video! Only suggestion: you have a wonderfully soothing voice but the music overpowered it … or is it just my type of old age hearing loss?! Keep up the excellent work!

Sharon, absolutely loved your video. I felt like I was strolling through Normandy this morning. Please keep ’em coming!

And, may I suggest La Closerie des Millets for your video series. I am not sure if I’m the only one who knows about this Pays d’Auge inn. My family stayed there in 2013 and the owner, Patrick, could be one of your “boyfriends” for the video series. I think you will absolutely love his taste. There is also a resident puppy dog named Axel who could be instant friends with Gibson and Ghetto.

All the best to you!

Interesting but in reality its very rare to find French people living with such style .
I enjoyed the film but the music was too intrusive and gave me a headache.
I hope you don’t think I’m being negative its just so many people come to France expecting to find the ” French Dream ” as shown in so many, many magazines and the reality is somewhat different.

That is interesting Diane – I think the joy of this blog is that the author finds beauty in everyday life and everyone likes to dream a little!
For a balanced point of view though – could you briefly expand on your insight and give any of your own experiences of the reality as you find it for people thinking of a future in France?

HI Diane

So sorry that the music gave you a headache, I’ll be choosing something different for the next videos 🙂

I think it’s obvious to everyone that there are many different styles of house and living in any country. I happen to have a lot of friend and acquaintances, from different walks of life, and ‘social status’ who each live in a very elegant, stylish and creative manner.

That is exactly what I showed in my book My Stylish French Girlfriends.

Of course not everything in France is perfect, and my readers are bright enough to guess that, but on this blog and now through the videos it is my pleasure to highlight the places and people that I love. I never lie on the blog and never portray something for what it is not.

I have learnt that highlighting the positive is good for the soul!

wishing you a lovely day …. here the sky is low and grey but the colours and the light are beautiful – I’m off to take some photos!

Hi Sharon,
The video was a pleasure visually; and what an undertaking! One of my favorite parts was visiting the charming antique stores, with their proprietors seemingly fascinated with their merchandise and with sharing its history. I do agree with many others about the music. I found the volume often drowning out your narration…and what you had to say was what interested me rather than the music. Perhaps, as someone
suggested, soft guitar music would be more effective. All in all, a praiseworthy accomplishment.

Hi Sharon,

Just wanted to weigh in here! I loved this video. Such a great idea and so well done. About the music…though it was loud, I didn’t pay much attention to it, at first, then, because the notes were so repetitive, it began to feel like a hammer on my ears. Because of that, I found it was interfering with your voice, distracting me from your words. I listened to it again, to be certain of what I am saying. I think, if you feel music adds to the video, perhaps it should be something softer, lighter…a sound that lets your voice be heard over it…music that gently supports the theme and atmosphere of your content. Anyway, loved the video and you!

Lovely, engaging, inspiring… The pace and music gives the viewer the chance to “experience” with you, to be along side of you sitting on the settee and enjoying the conversation. And as I told the HGTV producer your voice over lay is perfection… Bravo. I hope she picks you up, not only for you but for all of us as well. xx Rié

You apologized profusely at the start. A trait I tend to have as well. I find it relaxes me for being honest. You were smashing and I was entranced with your voice and the message you delivered. I picked up on several clever ideas to use across the pond. I can’t wait to follow your video concept in days to come. Bravo!
