If you are a fan of Patricia Wells, or if you have one of her many cookbooks on your shelves, then maybe you’ve dreamed of being able to cook like her, to host delicious dinner parties at your own place in Paris, to live the life that she so vividly evokes in her guides to food and life in the capital.   Well if that’s the case, then here is some very exciting news!   The studio that Patricia has used for the last twenty years to host her Parisian cooking school has just gone up for sale!

portrait of Patricia Wells

The studio is on a second floor apartment on the beautiful rue Jacob in the 6th arrondissement.     This is the part of Paris that Patricia and her husband have called home for many years, and when she welcomes her guests to her cooking school, she loves to show them around this fashionable area on the left bank of the Seine river.

The studio comprises a kitchen, a dining room that can seat eight people and what is currently a living room and office space.   There is also a bathroom, so the property could easily be used as a pied à terre apartment.  Patricia designed the kitchen to be practical if she cooks alone, but big enough to hold eight people when she hosts her classes.

In the kitchen there is a La Cornue stove with 5 gas burners and a gas grill, as well as a gas and an electric oven.  There is also a large warming drawer for warming plates and keeping food warm.

Patricia is selling because she wants to move the cooking ateliers to a different location not far away.   She explained to me that she’ll be leaving the kitchen and dining area with any fitted  furniture, including the beautiful glass fronted dresser in the dining room which is actually made from former café doors dating from the 1890’s.

In the kitchen the drawers and cupboard doors were bought in the Paris flea market.   Like so many of us, Patricia loves to visit the flea markets in Paris and in the south of France, and the shutters in her living room came from an antique dealer in Provence, and the flooring throughout the studio is old ‘tomette’ terracotta tiles.

There are two working fireplaces, one in the kitchen and one in the living area where there is a gas fireplace installed, these are a great luxury in Paris, and create a wonderfully welcome and cosy atmosphere.   There is also an entrance hall, and to access the studio visitors go through a pretty courtyard.    Rue Jacob is within walking distance of excellent food markets and so many great restaurants.  It is the dream Parisian location.

And if you are the lucky new owners of Patricia’s property, be sure to let us know if you feel inspired to cook!

Took a class here, back in the 90’s, when in Paris on one of hundreds of layovers (I’m a retired Flight Attendant). It is every bit as lovely as the photos depict, and someone is going to be very lucky! How I wish it was me!

Oh, Sharon….so, you know Patricia? I didn’t, of course, know that. I just served her lemon/ricotta terrine (from Wells’s very useful “Salad as a Meal” cookbook) today at lunch for two visiting Frenchwomen.

They loved it, of course. Everyone always does……..as they do Wells’s Lentil/mint/walnut/lemon/capers salad from her “The Provence Cookbook”.

The lady really DOES know how to simplify and pare things down to the choicest ingredients and flavors.

Oddly enough….I met her once; She did a book signing for the Salad cookbook, and I gave her a painting I’d done quickly of Chanteduc. I’d noticed that her website was run by someone in a very-nearby town, here in North Carolina. I thought that was more than a bit odd until I learned that the fellow is her nephew, and her sister lives’d in Durham, NC.(The sister and Patricia are both originally from somewhere in the wild upper-midwaste (that’s what my father calls the region)….so I was surprised to find them in North Carolina.

In any case….there she was…in a small bookstore up the street from my former house. I got her to repeat what I think is one of the funniest lines I’ve ever read…….she’d bought Julia Child’s old stove from La Pitchoune, and she afterwards said that buying Julia Child’s stove was similar to buying Freud’s couch.

So?….she’s smart, pretty, a good cook, AND funny?……no wonder her husband sticks with her. It would be hard to replace her.

sincerely,

david terry

Lovely place, but a bit far from home – Auckland, New Zealand.

BTW, I’m loving the new layout!

I met her and Walter many years ago–lovely people. The studio is charming. It’s collected, not “decorated.”

Oh Sharon, I have heard of her, but never have I ever seen a picture of her. As I scrolled down to see her face I let out a GASP! She is the spitting image of my dearly departed Mother when she was in her thirties and forties! And what is more Mother used to stand with her arms crossed just like that picture when she was scolding me about something. But then she would chase me around the house threatening to tickle me untill I said I was sorry. Her smile is exactly the same. She loved lipstick and would by three or four tubes of the same color as she wore it everyday even though she did not work out of the house when we were young. Her eyes were very poor so she wore glasses. Patricia and Mother could have been twin sisters from this photo. Mother was also a wonderful cook. Her Mother, my Grand Mother Ruby, was the owner of a very popular restaurant in down town Herrinton, Kansas, in the twenties and thirties, that was next to the train station for the arrival and departure of the Rock Island Railroad. Everyone ate there. Her pies were to die for. The train was a life line to Salina and traveled all the way up to Topeka and Kansas City and back again. My Grandpa Ernie, on my fathers side, was one of the engineers on that train.
How incredible Patricia looks. Her hair, her eyes, her nose, her skin, her teeth all so familiar. Makes me want to plant a big kiss on it. Amazing how a face can spark all the memories. They say we all have a doubleganger some where. It is just so interesting they are also linked with the crafting of good food.
I must look up her book list and invest in one or two. I only have about 80 cookbooks on French Cooking which my husband bought when he lived in Paris during the 60’s. One or two more won’t hurt. : ) The one David mentioned, ‘Salad as a meal’, sounds interesting. I could use some new ideas for salad.
Love you Sharon, for exposing us to such wonderful people from the other side of the world who’s faces bring us back home again.

What a wonderful place. Someone is going to be very lucky, indeed.
Sharon, do you know if the Kashas are going to resume their blog? I’ve followed it with interest, reading about their renovations, since you first wrote about it and have learned a lot. But it ceased with no warning a couple of months ago. I can’t find a place on their site to query unless it’s to say I want to buy.

I shall ask them the question Emm:) I know they have a great Instagram page under the name ABKasha where they show their renovations in progress

Realizing the dream of your own home does not tolerate fuss. The purchase and sale of real estate must be carried out in strict accordance with the requirements of the law and the practical advice of lawyers. Then the result will be positive for both parties to the transaction. This also applies to commercial real estate, in such cases it is worth contacting professionals such as Commercial Real Estate law firm https://brazeauseller.com/services/real-estate-law-and-development/ for example.
