my podcast with shannon ables

by Sharon Santoni

This morning I feel as if I am having breakfast with a friend.   A friend with great taste; eloquent, elegant, generous and very well organised!

Shannon Ables writes the blog The Simply Luxurious Life, because as she says she has  “come to realize that luxury is always in our proximity if only we know where to look”

On her website she shares details of her everyday life in Oregon.  Her love for France is evident, and I know that one day soon we’ll share coffee in my garden at home.   This week she is running her annual French week on her blog, which includes giveaways, interviews,  ideas for places to stay on your next trip to France and some great French fashion tips.

Shannon has written a bestselling book, and unusually has converted that book to an audio version!

There are many pleasures that we both enjoy, not the least of which are eating well; bringing fresh flowers into our home, and walking our dogs.

Last week I chatted with Shannon, and the podcast interview is broadcast today on her website.   We talked about recipes, about tablescapes and about the importance of keeping our ideas wide open for the everyday beauty that surrounds each of us.

Thank you Shannon for inviting me onto your podcast again, it’s a privilege and a pleasure !

Hi Sharon, just received your wonderful new book today!!! Love Love Love it!!! Merci
I also received my August Box and Love it as well. A soap came in the box and a scarf did not. Not sure what happened, as there was not a note of change included. I sooooo look forward to your quarterly box from France four times a year.

Love this! Now I know what to say to my husband who says I always choose easy. No, I’ll say. I choose simple luxury!!

Hello Sharon…quick note to share that I very much enjoyed the podcast. I have enjoyed your and Shannon’s blogs for quite some time and was not surprised to hear how easy and pleasant the conversation was between the two of you. Also, I thoroughly enjoyed your lovely new book. Congratulations! (I left a review at Amazon.com.)

Like you, Sharon, I also live in France, (SW) and what you said in the lovely podcast about shopping for the foods of the season and making recipes fit these foods, instead of the reverse, is so relevant and true, and can save a lot of frustrating moments ! Your book looks a real delight and think it will be my lifeline for cooking to the seasons. I am also looking forward to your table decorations as I also enjoy dressing the table with flowers from the garden, and from previous videos I know that your ideas on this subject will be inspirational, innovative and unique. I really enjoy your videos – keep them coming !!

Sharon – I’ll look forward to the podcast but wanted to let you know we received the new book pre-ordered through Amazon yesterday. It is a delight, as expected. Next time you are in Atlanta I’ll ask you to sign it!!

Best regards! Steve

Speaking of cooking seasonally?….just yesterday (and I live in North Carolina….the Southeastern USA)?…a new neighbor came by to introduce herself (we’d “met” previously only through local email, neighborhood-listserv).

We talked a while…and, as she was going, it occurred to me to offer her some of the late-strawberries another friend had given me (there are only so many strawberries one guy and three dogs can eat in one household).

Her response was “Oh…no thanks. I made this french strawberry tart-thing at Christmas and it was AWFUL. I’ll never do THAT again!!!”.

My unconsidered/immediate response was “Why in the hell would you be making a strawberry tart at Christmas? I bet it was awful….”

She thought I was rude. I thought she was ignorant. I doubt we’ll ever become close friends, even though she lives only about five minutes away.

Oh well….so much for converting folks to the pleasures and profits of shopping/cooking seasonally……

The podcast felt like a warm conversation over breakfast. Shannons love for France and the emphasis on finding luxury in daily life resonated with me. Looking forward to more inspiring content from both of you.
