If you are in Paris this spring, then treat yourself to this gorgeous Mary Cassatt exhibition.

If you don’t already know  the Musée Jacquemart André in Paris, then this is definitely one to make time for.  The beautiful building was home to collectors Edouard André and Nélie Jacquemart.

The mansion was constructed in the early 1870’s, and today it is still decorated in the style that André and Jacquemart would have enjoyed during their life there together.

After their deaths, the home was transformed into a museum and opened to the public in 1913, and was a huge success from day one.     Today, it is not only a wonderfully calm and elegant place to view art, but also a rather wonderful spot for lunch or afternoon tea.   You can actually come in and enjoy the restaurant without visiting the museum if you’re short on time.mary cassat show at the jacqueart andre museum, paris

Right now and until the 23 July there is a lovely exhibition of Mary Cassatt’s work.   Mary Cassatt was American, but after a visit to Paris as a child, she adopted France as her second place to be, and split her time between the States and France.     Prominent female painters were unusual in the Impressionist movement.  She was spotted by Degas, and became a prominent artist, best known for her portraits of mothers and children.

You can find all the details of the show HERE, I went during the morning, when there weren’t many people around and I could enjoy lunch in the restaurant after the show.

Mary Cassatt is one of my favorites. I have a print which I obtained from an Armand Hammer exhibit in Holyoke, Massachusetts probably 30 or more years ago and it is still one of my favorites along with Berthe Morrisseau. I am not sure I spelled that right. Thank you.

I too love Morisot. She was married to Eugene Manet who is Edouard’s brother. I saw just one of her paintings at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and was so taken with her that I did some googling and she became a favorite of mine.

Love Mary Cassatt. And the museum isn’t as well know as it should be. A charming place for lunch.

Thank you for the gentleness of Mary Cassatt’s work with my morning coffee! What a beautiful rendition of the Belle Epoch the museum is. Greetings from Rainier, Oregon.

Wish I could attend but we are not doing our annual trip to Paris this year. Love Jacquemart-Andre. That is where the original of the painting by Nattier of Mathilde de Canisy is on the first floor. I took photos of that portrait and made it into a poster. While in Paris don’t miss another small museum, my actual first favorite, Musee Nissim de Camondo.

Viewing her portraits is a moving experience. We saw hers and other impressionists at the Philadelphia art museum last year. Thank you for sharing your experience.

J’ai admiré les oeuvres de cette remarquable artiste,il y a quelques années à Giverny. J’ai été émerveillée par son travail et sa sensibilité.
C’est une exposition à voir absolument.

A favorite of mine, also. Since I have 4 daughters and 8 granddaughters, I am drawn the mother/ daughter pieces. I have several of the girl prints. They’re all so calming to view, peaceful.

The Musée Jacquemarte André is one of my favorite museums in Paris. The permanent collection is outstanding and the café is excellent. Wish we could see Mary there, but won’t be in Paris this summer.

I love her work, and that museum is a perfect place to exhibit it! We so enjoyed a visit there several years ago. So lovely and peaceful.

We visit the J-A Museum every time we’re in Paris. For their special exhibitions combined with a delightful lunch. It’s important to be a little early at the restaurant because quite a queue forms as it’s very popular with Parisians themselves. There’s also a nice little gift shop. And for those who might worry about tackling the stairs to exhibitions on the floor above they’ve now installed a lift for people with disabilities.

Just return from Paris this week and had my first J-A museum visit on Friday. It was as delightful as described. Will return in Oct and see the Caravaggio exhibition. Loved the cafe, and did stand in line for awhile.
