Thank you for all your comments this week – amazing! The past couple of days have been pretty rich in emotion on the blog so today I want to lighten up a bit and simply talk to you about curtains in the kitchen!
So here’s the thing. I shall be reworking my kitchen in a couple of months time, it’s only about 10 years overdue, so there’s no real rush, and I keep being drawn to curtains instead of doors beneath a worktop.
Every practical ounce of me is screaming “don’t do it” … “this way lies madness” , but it just looks so pretty.
Now I am sure that you have an opinion on this one, maybe you have curtains in your kitchen, maybe you have had and have sworn never again … please tell me.
thank you for your help and bon weekend!
PS Is anyone else having trouble adding new blogs to their blogroll?

Oh my Godness!
The pics you've posted are amazing…wow!!!!
Yes, I do have some curtains under my sink and no…tehy're not practical, expecially with a baby boy that is exploring!
But since you do not have babies around…well… I'd do that!

I love all the kitchens you have posted!!!
We are now decorating the kitchen in our new apartment (in an old house!) in Provence and I also love curtains in the kitchen, but I am not sure if it's the right thing for us.
So I am also very interested in what your other readers will say!
I am also having problems adding new blogs to my blogspot-blogroll, and I even can not delete links.
Bon weekend and kind regards from Germany, Monika
I had curtains on a cabinet in my former home. I made them from doubled burlap, pinched pleated on small cafe clips and strung on a cafe rod. They were the perfect solution to an open storage piece and looked great.
I had kids, dogs and lots of traffic on a natural tile floor and absolutely no trouble with them at all! I am sure whatever you choose will be beautiful.
It is not something you would see in the US but many years ago my aunt had a sink with legs and curtins around it. My cabinets get splashed enough and I just wipe them down every once in a while, can't imagine what the curtins would look like in my kitchen.

If you already have cabinets but love the look of curtains, you could always run a velcro strip at the top of the cabinets and attach a curtain panel to each door.
Sharon, why not try both, you don't need to have curtains under every worktop. In our guest kitchen we have one space under a worktop with curtains…the reason is to hide the very ugly gas bottle that supplies the hob, the bin, bucket and other practical but unsightly stuff, the rest of the units are open. never had a problem with the curtains, I find it very useful. Hope this helps.

The curtains in all the pictures look really lovely but probably a little impractical. They could get stained but then again they can be washed. The romantic in me says do curtains if the rest of the kitchen is olde worlde.
Go for it! I love that curtain as cupboard door look, and it would be so cheap and easy to implement that if you changed your mind in a year it would be of no consequence. Imagine what it would add to the workload if you had roman blinds on your cabinets!
I think its really pretty and charming. A friend had them but found them to be too much maintenance, with her young kids and dogs but your situation might be different. It is so pretty and gives such a soft appeal to a kitchen…I say go for it!
I've had curtains instead of doors for some 30 years in my kitchen…then…I had handmade doors made….I enjoy the change…Mel's Designs
Hello dear Sharon.. I have curtains in my working pantry and love them even though that is where I do my baking.. They are washable and easy to rehang.. I have been planning on adding a couple to the kitchen cupboards, too… I love them..
Yes, I have been trying to add a couple of new blogs but they won't save..
Just a Canadian perspective..
I would only use a curtain on a small are…like a sink or a pantry. I don;t think it;s practical enough for other areas. I could see my husband cursing me every time he struggled to get things in an out without being tied up in the curtain.
I haven;t been able to delete or add blogs for ages. I had to start another blog roll and put new blogs there.
Wonderful pictures, as usual. I just did up my kitchen, and I think its much more practical and hygienic to be able to wipe down the cupboards although I do love the look of the curtains, but only in a small area, maybe a utility room or something.
Huh. I am not sure what the big deal is about curtains and never have! I have them on a part of my work surface and it really isn't the least bit more difficult. I don't have children but have a Golden and it isn't like his fur sticks to it or anything (although it does EVERYWHERE ELSE and I know you understand). I love the look and although I haven't done it yet, I could imagine having a second set to change in the winter just like window curtains to give a different look. I imagine you wouldn't use your newly acquired ticking for this but wouldn't it be beautiful?
These photos are so gorgeous.
Bon weekend!
I loved the curtains and have made them in the guest house matching all the colours of the sitting pillows they look great, but make sure the curtains are fixed well UNDER the worktop(2nd picture) since you are not about to wash them daily. If I could I would never do this again.Dorka from Hungary http://www.dorottyaudvar.co.hu
Dear Sharon, I have had curtains in my kitchen for more than 16 years. They hide the washer and dryer. I also use curtains on a swing in our guest cottage. It hides the small under counter refrigerator. I find them practical and charming.
All one has to do is look at your beautiful examples to be convinced that curtains in the kitchen have a place. Besides, it's a small investment and you can always change your mind. And think of the many fabric choices. I wouldn't suggest burlap, it doesn't fold or hang properly.
I have never had curtains but love the charming look of them….all the photos are gorgeous! As far as the blogroll…I had to start a second one as I can't add or even delete blogs!
I would do a combination of both curtains and door/drawers. Feel free to have a look at my pinterest boards on Kitchen and Rustic Contemporary 🙂
I would do both. I love the look of a skirt under the sink area. These are gorgeous images!!
I would definitely do both. I love the look of the curtains under the sink in a kitchen and then cupboards to the side. I have curtains in my laundry room, covering my washing machine and laundry baskets – a VERY pretty solution to a very UNPRETTY area!
Aaahhhh…just listen to you. "Every practical ounce of me is screaming "don't do it" … "this way lies madness" , but it just looks so pretty." You are perfectly quotable!! If you love it, and you can have it, why live without it. It will bring you joy! Because pretty matters!
You've got to at least try the curtains, forget practical!
Also, just wanted to say that I didn't comment on yesterday's post, but I have not stopped thinking about it. It truly made me pause and reflect. I even read it to my husband. Thank you!
I have never been a huge fan of cabinet curtains, till NOW!! I think a mix of doors and curtains would be fabulous! Fabric is alot easier to change out (for an "update") than painting or staining cabinets, for sure!
Curtains on lower cabinets works for a very specific look. I think it works best when it is only on the cabinet under the sink. And – have two made, one a natural/light shade and one dark.
I have had to add new blogs by following first, then copy/pasting their uvl into my blog roll.
I have always loved cabinet curtains! I think they bring a lot of warmth and charm to a kitchen and look very chic. I also love glass doors too…if you can manage to keep the shelves straightened. LOL I say go for it!
I had some problems with adding people to my blog roll a month or so ago. It lasted about 3 weeks! I couldn't add anyone. They must be working on it again. I added someone last week with no problem.
I love the soft, earthy, primitive, peaceful look of your kitchen. I like the windows curtain free. But if you need privacy, I can see your difficulty. Since you have used curtains instead of wood for cabinets; perhaps on a few windows you could use wood instead of curtains, especially if the wood could go on the outside of the home.
I say follow your heart. You can always change your mind later. I love the examples you've shown – so full of character!
I'm about to paint my china cabinet – it's a rustic style and I think it will look great. However, my mother is horrified at the thought and told me I'd ruin it and cheapen the piece. After a few minutes of waffling, I decided to go ahead with it anyway. I hope to begin this weekend. Follow your heart. It's your kitchen.
Hello, what a wonderful blog you have! I have been following for a while, but thought I'd finally post today. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to go ahead – if you are purchasing new cabinets or reusing old ones for that matter- to set up the kitchen with the doors on, and then just take them off and put them into storage for later if the curtains don't work out. Options are always possible then!
Curtains would be very pretty, however I might only go with the one under your sink area, then the rest of them doors, you can always go back to wood if the curtains don't appeal to you, whatever you choose will be beautiful I am sure !
I love the idea! I used curtains under a countertop in my pantry for quite some time (until I installed a cabinet) and I love the look for a rustic style. And if you decide after a while that you don't like it, its so easy to change!
I can't help you on the curtain front — but I tried to follow a blog a few minutes ago and blogger wouldn't let me add it. Argh.
I have had curtains under the kitchen sink for years–no problem. I love the look so much that I am adding them to my new kitchen too. Go for it!
xo, Lissy
Just sit back and LOOK at the 4th photo in your post. Now woudln't you love to be looking into your kitchen and seeing that??? It's like the kitchen gets all dressed up in a pretty skirt. Kitchens are by nature pretty sleek and efficient. A skirted cabinet makes it ready for a party anytime!
Funny you should post this! We have just redone our laundry room/pantry and I purposely left one section doorless so as to have a curtain there! I have yet to install it, but I like the contrast in textures with fabric and wood. As other readers have commented, a little goes a long way in this!
Go for it! … if it doesn't work, it is easily changed. Enjoy your weekend. Jalon
They are pretty, but not if you have mice, squirrels, jack russell terriers, cats or children… Except that the person who suggests using them to hide a dishwasher has a very good idea. They could also hide cheap cupboards used for infrequent storage.
I especially like the kitchen with the blue and white curtains and those checkered pillows in the basket and chairs…timeless design!
Hi Sharon – I look at your site daily and simply love most of your ideas but although the curtains may look most attractive I would steer clear of them as they would be most impractical unless you had several sets and enjoy doing laundry. It would drive me silly when a small mark spoilt the look and they would probably be in the wash daily in my home. At least most other surfaces can be wiped over readily without any fuss. I think it would discourage me to use my kitchen any more than absolutely necessary and I don't see how that would fit in with your lifestyle. Good Luck!!!
I could see doing something sort of Martha Stuart-y here…ie using French dish towels as curtains.
I love the look…and it is very French….
Go for it!! It is a wonderful, beautiful and relaxed country look!
go for it!

Definitely my kind of kitchen, something I want my kitchen to look like. Brings back the memories of my grandmothers kitchen when I was a kid. Wonderful selection, love the rustic one.
Have a great weekend,
Johan
I love the kitchens you posted. It seems practical to me as long as the little kids/pets are not going to get in anything dangerous. I liked the idea of summer and winter sets! I have an old child's quilt hiding the mess under the laundry sink I put up with an expansion rod between the dryer and the refrigerator. I use binder clips so I could adjust the length. I smile at it every time I do the laundry (3 loads a day!) .
Yes, they look pretty but I wonder about their practicality
Dust and grease get everywhere and without doors to keep it out your pots and pans and whatever is stored behind the curtains is going to get grimey, plus the curtains will need washing weekly to keep them fresh and, well, it just doesn't seem right to me, not for la cuisine….
I am all for looking good but…
I suspect that I am going against the flow here!
plus ça change…
I've never had curtains in my kitchen, but I too am going to put them on in my new one. I love how they look so charming!
Wonderful selection of images!
Yes, it's more than 2 months I have problems with my blogroll and I can't add new blogs… Any solution anyone?? Sharon if you have can you tell me please??
Have a nice week my darling!
Silvia
Morning Shanon;
Lovely photos as usual and a neat conservation this Morning, curtains:
I have had them before under my kitchen cabinets. They were lovely and added so such a softness to the remaining hard surfaces in the rest of the kitchen. However, that being said, the maintenance was very prohibitive for me. The visiting children and the animals were a pain. As I am sure you know, dog hair goes everywhere including on anything under the curtains. The curtains must be washed regular to keep the kitchen grease at a minimum if you cook a lot which I did. Lovely to look at but a lot of extra maintenance I found. How much extra time do you have? They are lovely though and can be replaced if you find them to much of an extra load. At least you can try them without little trouble. You can always do doors if they don't work for you!~Char
I love the curtains, the idea and the look, but my hubs would never go for it..kind of feminine i think
I would go for the curtains, you could always have doors put on if you change your mind. Great photos, my favourites are numbers four and six.
I love the look of the curtains, but then I would wonder how long it would be until they got dirty and would need to be washed… I have two dogs who shed an awful lot, so it would just be another thing that would attract their hair.
Beautiful images, they are all so divine, I think I couldn't resist using the curtains if I had the opportunity. I am decorating a dollhouse for my daughter and added some curtains under the sink so I guess I'm already sold!
Fiona
I love the blue curtains in the second photo They would be perfect for your farmhouse kitchen. Happy weekend.
I love the idea of curtains. I love that not only could you wash them but update often as tastes change.
I took down cabinet doors and added curtains and I love them. I think they are much more practical, easier to clean (just throw them in the wash, and they are so much prettier. Someday when I have my dream kitchen there will be not a one cabinet door…only curtains! Go for it!
I only recently found your blog and so far love it. I adore the curtains. They are so much softer. My concern would be if you have pets, that the hair/dust would find its way to the items in the cupboards. That would be my only reserve as doors are easier to add later than to take off. enjoy-
I moved into a house with cabinets that were so dirty around the pulls and drips down the front of them. I still can't get all the drips and greasy dirt off. I'm replacing the ones under my sink with curtains! And just think, I could make more than one set and change them out. I have 3 cats and a dog – I figured with what little I put under the sink, the cats will love it!

Excessive long curtains are not suitable for kitchen windows. Short curtains offer a comfy mood. Always measure your window before you go to install curtains.
