[blank] One of my very favourite features of the older châteaux and manor houses in Normandy, is their traditional chequered walls.[blank]
[blank]Don’t you think it would make you happy to wake up in a chequered château?! I’d have a permanent smile.
These walls are 16th century, and were basically built with materials to hand, namely brick and stone. Today most have been restored and perfectly maintained, but now and again I come across a smaller version, at the end of a green valley, looking a little sad, and in need of some TLC ….[blank]

[blank]If you want to see some more, then check out names like Falaise, St Germain du Livet, or Manoir de Blais.[blank]

It would make me oh so happy to wake up in a chequered chateau! Like something out of a fairy tale. Have a beautiful weekend, Sharon! XO
what charming estates
It's a fascinating building style. Wonder why it evolved that way? Love the second picture, everything there: checkered walls, manor house, turret, horses, even what looks like a moat. I'm off to look up those names you mentioned.
Merci beaucoup
Those are unique and very beautiful!
Oi! Que lindo castelo.Amei.Abraço
Oh!!! Checkered stonework is the stuff of fairy tales! Alas, not in Normandy, but I have stayed three times now at a checkered idyll in the Loire, Chateau des Reaux. https://www.chateaudesreaux.fr/en
Amazingly wonderful, the checkerboard walls. They are a delight to see and almost feel as tho I am standing before them. I would Love to tour your Normandy.
