Travel in France is something I love to do, as a family, with my husband or sometimes alone. Even after all these decades of living here, I still love the details. And of course, we love to invite others to travel in France with us. As we are half way through our MFCH Tour season, I make time to pause and reflect on the trips we made so far this year.
This Spring we have traveled several times to southern France and I remember the beautiful places we visit the artists who let us into their ateliers, the places we shopped and the good food and wine we enjoyed.
But most of all I remember our amazing guests. Without personal connections, shared experiences, we are nothing. It’s my joy to welcome new guests on each tour, and my personal pride to see so many familiar faces return. Because we could spend hours and days putting together our itineraries, reserving restaurants, reaching out to artisans, coordinating with hotels …. but if our guests aren’t open to our ideas, then all this care and effort is for nothing.
When I curate our tour itineraries, I am constantly looking for ways to enchant, entertain, stimulate and inform our guests. Often our visits will provoke a lot of thought and reflection. We chat endlessly … while we are travelling in our vehicles together, over meals, and at the end of the day when we gather to share our experience. We like to think that besides the wonderful meals we enjoy, that our tours also provide food for the soul.
I co-hosted our most recent tour with my friend, the floral artist, Lucy Hunter. The theme of that tour was Creativity in Provence. And besides touring the region, and visiting the markets and the gorgeous little villages, we also spent time exploring our own creativity. We created floral art for our rooms, we sat in an olive grove and tried our hand at watercolor painting and we improved our photography skills.
Many of our guests are at a moment in their lives where they are looking for their next steps. And while we don’t pretend to have the answers to their questions, we like to think that we get their creative juices flowing and help them think outside the box. Sometimes, by observing other people get creative, we discover unexpected paths to explore.
