my new book - a giveaway and how it came to be - MY FRENCH COUNTRY HOME

My new book is released on the 8th August and it is an exciting moment.

Turning the pages of the author copy that arrived here a couple of weeks ago has brought it all back to me.   Because writing and creating a book is a process.   This book is entitled My French Country Home – Entertaining through the Seasons and with the photographer Franck Schmitt, we took photos over one whole year, striving to find fresh ideas and situations to highlight each season along the way.

Entertaining has always played a big part in my life.  Growing up in England, my parents threw dinner parties and open house holiday parties, and the atmosphere was always fun, never stressful.   My French parents in law were also great entertainers, their table famous for delicious food and lively conversation.   With our parallel backgrounds, it came naturally for my husband and I to entertain a lot.  First there were the fancy dinners we threw as  a young couple, then through all the years when the children were young our entertaining was lively and sometimes chaotic but never boring, And now that we are empty nesters we have slipped into a different rhythm of dinners  or lunches with friends .  Each stage of life lending itself to a different style of entertainment, but the pleasure never diminishing.

If there is one thing that I have understood about entertaining is the importance of making friends feel welcome, and creating a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere.   Laying a pretty table, or arranging a few flowers may help the aesthetics, and of course good food never goes amiss!   But I gauge the success of an evening by the laughter and lively discussion around the table rather than a high score for the decor.

I’m happy to offer the opportunity to win a copy of the book to three of my readers.    The winners will be picked by a random draw on Friday  4th August and announced here on the blog.
