the chateau kitchen

by Sharon Santoni
dark brick-walled kitchen with black mantle and sideboard

How about this for an amazing authentic château cuisine!

brick-walled chateau kitchen with large dining table and island with pots

I love the mellow colour of the old brick walls, the exceptional brick ceiling, the lack of structure to the room, and of course the old cooking range.

Funny though, when we all long for sleek, easy to clean, designer kitchens, how we are drawn towards this room which answers none of those criteria.

I think if this were my room the only thing I may add would be curtains at the windows, I know about draughty old châteaux, and even with shutters closed at night, I think a little extra protection would be comforting.

Finally, this kitchen even enjoys one of my favourite features in any house, a view onto an enfilade of rooms.

The kitchen at the top is amazing. there is something refreshingly masculine about it.

Beautiful kitchens. If only one could afford a kitchen that big (imagine the size of the house!). I really loved the long communal table with the bench and stools and all the pots, pans and stuff underneath. Don´t you love the tile floor (it´s tile, right?) on the first picture? I'm glad you posted more pic of that kitchen – it amazing. I could easily dream about it all night!
The furniture pieces caught my eye…that armoire piece makes the entire room. wonder where one finds such gorgeous pieces of furniture!

I absolutely could not endure a kitchen with curtains for doors, nor some of the other very ancient woodwork that is evident in some of these pictures. I do like the charm of the kitchens, but woodworker that I am, I would have to go through and refurbish them. It’s all what you get used to, I suppose, and whatever you’ve endured in your past. For me it’s too many years doing without, so now when I think kitchens, I think well-made cabinets!

That is one of those kitchens that may be entirely impractical, but so gorgeous to cook in, nonetheless. Thanks for sharing! I too adore the expose, weathered brick.

No built in kitchen cabinets? What do I think? Having had that once, what I think is dust. …what i remember is having to wash everything before I used it. Even now I have my platters on display and must wash before use and if your are in a hurry…
So lovely in design, but practical? maybe I'm just getting to be an old crank…

These kitchens are beautiful but mine would also have to be warm : D

"z" old crank lol

Those are fabulous! I love the idea of the rich, dark colors, the way the cabinetry is not "built in", the old worn in much loved look. I think they are all fabulous and the copper pot collection is the crowning touch:)

Thanks for sharing!

I too have a very minimal amount of lower cabinets. The rest is made up odd furniture pieces and I love it. I find that because I use all my items regularly they really don't get dusty.

This kitchen is beautiful!

I have open shelving as well and as frequently as we use dishes, they don't have a chance to gather dust! I love all of the images and would take any one of the kitchens in a heartbeat!

Gorgeous photos. I love the whole look. Only accomplishable in a house of that age and calibre though.

These kitchens are wonderful…

We should all have a town home with a sleek modern kitchen as well as a country home for the warm cozy kitchen… best of both worlds.

I'm wowed!!! That chateau kitchen is just BEAUTIFUL and AUTHENTIC!!
I really do not think such a kitchen is harder to clean than a more modern one: if you use the right materials such as wood (not the perfect, polished one, but the rustic one, stones, bricks and so on) you would be shocked by the easiness of their upkeeping. Really, i do speak like that because I have those materials all around my home and they're much easier than a tile or a polished surface!!!

I love an unfitted kitchen, the kind where you can take the kitchen with you. Of course, many of us would not ever want to leave this charming space. I especially love the Tondino plates juxtaposed against the beautiful brick walls.

Sigh .. gorgeous. Comfy, roomy. To be lived in. I'd love it. Except for food spills on the carpets. I like to mop :o)
