colours of gardens in the south of france

by Sharon Santoni
A very busy day today, so I am simply leaving you with a couple of beautiful gardens to contemplate.  They are all in the South of France, where there is something special in the colours of the vegetation and the light.  Here they avoid busy flowerbeds, greedy for water and maintenance and  tend to emphasise more the colour of the stone and trees against layers of green .  I find the result restful and soothing.  And that my friends is exactly what I need today!
Tomorrow I’ll have time to chat!

Lost in Provence January 12, 2012 - 2:39 pm

Yep, it is way too hot in summer for much in the way of flowers in Provence. We took care of a friends garden for ten days last August and I was petrified that I was killing everything! By the end of the day, all of the flowers would be on their sides with thirst but would magically spring up overnight after copious watering.

Now I am off to find that house…wow.

Have a great day!

What a wonderful home this is!
And the garden…earthy tones!Love it…even if I also love typical cottage style gardens!

Can I ask you a thing? (you will answer when you'll be a little more relaxed and less busy).
In your header pics I see a green climbing tree on your home front….is that an evergreen? Does it resist to frost?? wowwww!!

Since you found all these gorgeous photos in Sothebys' they are all for sale, bien sûr. I would love moving into one of these, at least part of the year, but as Heather pointed out, these gardens are a lot of work in the summer. I guess I am ready to make an offer if they throw in the gardener (the gardening crew?) — 😉 Veronique (French Girl in Seattle)

Enchanting and beautiful…I'd love to spend time in the south of France.

You can't blame a girl for dreaming!

Gorgeous gardens. I'm moving in that direction myself because of water restrictions here.

Hello Sharon !
Cette maison dans le sud me fait rêver… On s'y mettrait bien au soleil ! Par ce temps gris j'ai froid toute la journée ( la maison du XVIè est très mal isolée ) sauf sur mon cheval !
Merci !
Céline.

It is fun to see the lush greens of these garden spaces, as we are currently covered in white.

Fondly,

We were in the south of France in May a few years ago and I remember how lovely the gardens were. The only colour I remember is red from the poppies that grew everywhere. In the formal gardens were the various shades of green, stone and that wonderful blue sky.

Beautiful Sharon, reinforces my love of boxwoods and parterres. I think your ever changing banner with your homes charming exterior is very effective. Hope you are enjoying a more relaxing beginning to the New Year. N.

Beautiful and serene. There is a lesson I need to learn here. I persist with garden beds of flowers and get quite upset when the azaleas, hydrangeas and other less heat hardy plants die. We had days over 40deg C last week which really stressed my plants. I can see a few more box hedges being planted this autumn.
Warm regards.
