understated French elegance

by Sharon Santoni
I love the quiet understated style of the Belgian interiors.  This house is in France, but near the Belgian border and I have been looking closely at the details.
The rooms are very high, which I don’t normally like, but here it seems to work thanks to the clever positioning of oversize mirrors and large, neutral coloured furniture.
In the bathroom another huge mirror has been stood against the wall, giving an exceptional feel to a small room.

The kitchen dining area is my favourite.  I love their choice of flooring; the contrast between the rustic table and the ornate chairs; the glass fronted free standing cabinets and of course the stove! Excuse me… the stove?!!   What a monster! but just think how easy it would be to cook lunch for 20 with a baby like that in the kitchen!
Plus in the kitchen, I love the collection of cake stands arranged  under the island.  They’d make for a lot of dusting but they look fantastic.
What does this style say to you?

Sharon, what a fabulous combination of sleek and texture. Love the bathroom, sleek tub & mirror with the rustic door. The breakfast room is my favorite, very stylish yet completely family friendly. Would love to see a little bit of color sprinkled about, a few yellow accents could be lovely.

I have loved the understated Belgian style for a long time. I particularly like the emphasis on tactile surfaces, industrial touches, natural materials and colours and the play with scale. It can be quite sparse though and furniture etc really has to be able to stand up to scrutiny – as a Belgian friend told me Belgians tend to go for quality rather than quantity when choosing furniture, and much is inherited.

OMG the dusting in that kitchen though!! And how many cake stands do you need? I Have decided not to be a dusting martyr to open shelving however cool it looks!

So elegant really. I love the details, the color of the walls, the monumental chandelier, the bathroom old door. Old and new mixed in a so light way: The style I like so much!

Sharon, this is one of my favorites! I think that I first saw this home on Greet's blog (?) and am especially obsessed by the living room–it is just so peaceful. When we moved into our new(ish) apartment, I decided to keep the tones in the living room as quiet as possible because of this space. Thanks for this post, it was good to see photos that I hadn't before!

The colours and furnishings of this house work so well with the proportion of the rooms and the light. The rooms are tranquil and timeless….. I can imagine myself curled up on the grey couch reading a book. Thank you for the inspiration.

Love the large mirror behind the tub…enlarges the room and adds a big dash of sensual.

I love those large mirrors, and that gorgeous kitchen. Not sure about all those cake stands (how often would you really bake 20 cakes at once?)

Just beautiful! Thanks for sharing!

This style says to me there are no babies in that kitchen. If there were the cake stands would be stored somewhere else. In fact, I think is screams no one lives here. That's how it stays so beautiful. Or maybe people do live here -they just clean up before pictures are taken.

it says GORGEOUS!!
I would throw myself out the window after seeing that home, but it's cold and sleety out and not at all inviting…

When I first saw it in the Art et Decoration magazine I adored it, so much so that I am planning on incorporating some of the elements such as the stand alone bath, large old mirrors and similar colour for the couch on a loft apartment project that I have just started work on.

I found an extra large chandelier which is too die for but is also very heavy hence the first task will be to ensure that it is securely fixed 🙂

A tres bientot, Leeann x

Stunning in its simplicity is what it says to me. I love everything about it from the grey linen upholstery to the super high ceiling, which I personally love, to the grand mirrors. Thanks Sharon. What a gorgeous home!

I love the home, but like Helen, would love to see a few more personal items in it, some art, something. It looks too much like a set design, but I love the home, and the details. Curious why you don't like high ceilings in general?

Wonderful International style. I love textures and monochromatic palettes. The rooms say that thoughtful, balanced, healthy-living, cultural-minded polite but unstuffy people live here…lots of charm and whimsy….and freshness.

My son is French and relocated from Paris to Amsterdam for work. He's since spent much time in Belgium…and especially loves the town of Spa. Love their design sensibility.

Lovely, thank you!

Love the greys and mirrors but it still feels to rich for me…like I should live in the servants quarters. I prefer a cottage. ox

Sharon, this must be my favorite set of elements in a kitchen to date! I too so love the ornate chairs and rustic table, and the iron topped side buffet is lovely . I am making mental as well as other notes for our new kitchen reno this summer. I also love the open glass fronted cabinets. Perfection! N. xo

Just the right mix of hi and low, rustic and polished. I think I would love to meet my family and friends there for a week long vacation to share stories, walks, meals and play games.
As for the dusting, I think I would leave that to a reliable staff. I do like to clean but that might take away from all the baking of cakes and sweets to top those cake stands. We could have a splendid sweets party!

What does this style "say" to me?…

Most immediately, it says to me "These people don't actually cook".

…Or, for that matter, have dogs, children, or elderly chain-smoking mothers-in-law.

It is quite lovely, though.

Bemusedly,
