the valley through the seasons

by Sharon Santoni
Driving home this week, I pulled off the road as we reached the valley and got out my camera.  I sensed a little bristling of impatience in the car  “Mummy, why do you need another picture of that view, you’ve got loads already?!”     He was right of course … my son, cutting down to the essential in life.  Shame that my essential and his essential don’t always coincide ….
So –  angel that he is –   he bore with me for a whole 45 seconds while I clicked away, happy and then we were back en route, relieved, content and in the throws of a discussion about when is a picture not just a picture, and what is a good picture anyway!!
I’m sure he got out the car thinking, “that’s it, she’s  lost it!” …  but that doesn’t matter.

So what was the view that couldn’t wait?  This little road that winds its way down to our village, my eye is always drawn to the solitary tree and the soft colours that change so beautifully through the season.

See what you think ….

No matter what my children say,  I’ll still take the pictures and I still enjoy those short moments in the day when I stop dead in my tracks and say Yes!

Absolutely stunning, especially the picture with the poppies. Your blog and pictures remind so much of France that I miss and how much more of it I must experience.

Our first trip to France I told my husband that if France is like the alphabet we are on the small letter" a". There is just so much to experience.

Cheers from Vancouver, BC

Even if I didn't have my camera with me, I too would stop there- just to take it all in. It is truly lovely, every season.

It's a beautiful view, not surprised you want to capture it all the time! that's one of the reasons why we moved to the countryside, you're more aware of nature and the passing of the seasons. The landscape is ever changing, there is always something new to admire. Enjoy your valley!

There's a lake near me, that looks different and beautiful on any given day. I always think I should get pictures of how it looks when I pass because I know it changes every time. I am going to…for sure now! Love these pictures. Your children will remember that you loved that view one day, many years from now.

Sharon, I'm glad you stop to take the picture and that you share these moments with us. I think that observing the beauty around us – whether we live in the idyllic countryside like you or the busting city – is one of life's joys. Thanks for sharing your view!

Dear, dear Sharon. Please don't stop taking this photo. This view captures the essence of country life. Seeing the seasons change reveals a constancy, a stability, despite what goes on around us. Dear Son, bless his little heart, will understand the concept in time. Thank You.

I am reminded of a comment made some time ago, by the talented Julochka. ( https://www.julochka.com/p/about-me.html ) I am paraphrasing here, but, she noted that digital photography has freed us to take the same photo over and over again. Despite some of the attributes of film cameras, the digital has allowed us an instant gratification that film cannot. I do the same but my skills are rather rudimentary:)

Surely you won't make me choose! They are all beautiful in their own way. I love the idea of revisiting a certain spot throughout the year.

Not only will your children mature and understand one day just what it is that made you stop to enjoy the view so often; but they will have a legacy of incredible photographic memories because of your appreciation of natures beauty.
Thanks for always taking us on your journeys. I love the view!

I love those moments when I know my daughter is thinking "OK, she's really lost it" ~ if you know they're thinking that, then you haven't. Stunning photographs.

I understand completely about needing to document the same view in changing light, changing season, changing weather. I've been going through old photos and I have so many shots of my garden from the exact same angle in different conditions over 10 years. It would be a beautiful collage or slideshow kind of film…if I ever get around to it!

What beautiful images and for those of us on the other side of the "pond" it's very entertaining to see the countryside around your farm, thank you.

You may have "lost it" but look how much you've gained. Beauty in the everyday little moments. That's what its all about for me!

Changing to the light, the colours from several shades of green to browns/greys and finally to white. The telling of time, you are capturing moments in time and recording it.
They are beautiful photographs.
