a French day out

by Sharon Santoni
One of my favourite towns in Normandy is Lyons La Forêt.  Surrounded by beautiful green countryside and forest, the town centre is small and unspoilt.
A great place to drive to for lunch, a little brocante shopping.  A place to wander and soak in the atmosphere.

My favourite spot for lunch?  In the winter the Grand Cerf Hotel
and in the summer, the garden of La Licorne
after lunch a little brocante shopping

and some goodies from the farm shop

The antique store would be my favorite go-to place for inspiration. Thank you for the tour.

We must put this village on our stopping list for our trip next month. We are staying with friends near Caen – any other suggestions?

I loved seeing this beautiful town. It is ideal and so very charming.
This is the French architecture I spend hours searching for online. I am trying to design my dollhouse. 😉

I would love to go to the Grand Cerf Hotel …the birch trees and low chairs on the red tile floor just have me spinning …oh how surreal…(:

Ha, I have been there many a time – there is also a lovely walk that starts in the town and takes in the beautiful woodland that gives it its name. Plenty of time to have lunch before hand or stop in a cafe for a hot chocolate afterwards (or wine depending how you are feeling at the time!)

I know this place like the back of my hand. Once, when I arrived back from a trip to the states, my husband (French) said to me: I have a surprise for you. He took me to Lyons La Foret and there they were filming the movie, Madame Bovary. Facinating to see how the asphalt was covered with canvas and how earth and gravel were dumped over it. Plus they surfaced several exteriors with fiberglass – some of them you wouldn't have thought they needed it since they looked authentic enough for our eyes. But the most wonderful thing is: they contructed a fiberglass fountain in the town square which was kept for AGES after the movie production finished and the town transformed back to what it was. And even though it was continually disinigrating, they kept it and kept it.

Sometime later, on yet another afternoon outing in Lyons, we saw stonemacons contructing and exact replica of the fountain. Perfect in everyway, this fountain one would have sworn it had been there forever. But it is the 1991 movie that left it's legacy to Lyons.

As I said to my husband: this is one example of LIFE imitating art!
