my garden in may

by Sharon Santoni

I know that you are a very polite and kind bunch of bloggers and that you’ll say “ooh!” and maybe “aaah!” at these shots of my garden, but I am sorry to say that there are parts that are not quite what I wanted  this year.

Why is that?   Well, grieve me though it may to admit it, there are only 24 hours in a day, and this blog and all that accompanies does seem to be gobbling up quite a few of those hours at the moment.   Leaving me less time to get out and pull weeds and divide plants.

Added to that our unusually harsh winter which took out several trees and bushes, and you have a good year, but not the best ever.
Anyway, our hawthorn tree looked great, the peonies and roses are about to happen, delphiniums are standing tall and I am rather pleased with my black and white window boxes.[blank]

I’ll just have to have the perfect garden in my next life!
Hope your week is off to a sunny week too.

I'm going to ooohhh and aahhh, because even if you think it's kind of disappointing, I think it's all gorgeous – I have a couple of shrubs in my front yard, and a small rose bush, and that's about the extend of my blooming!

I am not just being polite and telling you your perennial borders are so pretty Sharon. I am a bit jealous however, on how you can grow lupine and delphinium so very nicely….the wind out here on the prairie prevents me from having those sorts of flowers – an arrangement indoors with lupine would be such a treat!

You are so right, we think your garden is truely gorgeous. What are your dissappointments and concerns? Maybe we could help. My garden has been looking less lush with fewer blooms in the past 3 years and I now realise that the Manchurian pears were robbing the roses and iris of too much light. A storm on Christmas eve fixed that up and with one pear totally removed and another with several main branches gone light is back and I am hoping the roses will respond.
On another note, I was greeted by cattle in the garden yesterday morning! Writing about them seems to have summonds them!
Enjoy Spring in your beautiful garden and keep delighting us with it's beauty.

It's quite funny that our daughter bought our home and took over my meticulous garden and has quite let it go. bummer. But I have to admit, from a distance (the pond patio chair) it still looks very beautiful. Gardening was my thing, not hers and she just lets it all go wild. I have to bite my lip and a nice glass of sauvignon blanc helps the matter, but the truth is..there is some real beauty in just plain old nature!

we aren't being polite, sharon…those flowers really are gorgeous! haha. I do know the feeling, though…I need to spend time out in the yard! Things bloom in spite of our neglect though! 🙂

If not, could you let me know which it is ,I've fallen in love with it.

Sharon, I am having the same problem. Just very busy, too busy for the garden to look as I would like. Why does it bother me so at every glance? I am trying to make peace with the fact that I cannot do it all. Have a wonderful day.
PS Still trying to work out coming in October!

They are all so beautiful, I especially like the lupines and delphiniums. It's hard to keep all areas of the garden in tip top shape all the time without lots of help…I keep trying!

I think you have a gorgeous garden! I see so many beautiful plants and the colors mix beautifully together. When we lived in northwest Indiana (near Chicago, Illinois), we had some of the most brutal and coldest winters. We never knew until the end of the season what plants and shrubs would survive.

I think you are a" true gardener"…
we are never completely satisfied with the state of our gardens…
there is always a weed to pull, flowers to dead head, something to prune, edges to shear…
the overall effect is stunning and beautiful.

Stand back and soak up all the loveliness!
It's startling in it's beauty…
ooh aah.

I think your garden looks sumptuous. Mine, too, suffers from neglect because there's simply no time to work in it. I'm in Southern Calif. USA and we have drought; barely any rain this year, so wild roses suffer, less of our California poppies in the foothills and purple jacaranda trees are looking very straggly. My hibiscus did pop out; they love the heat (in my opinion, we're already 'way too warm for May here; 86-degrees–F–on my shaded porch yesterday).

I have thought about what kind of time it must take when you and other blog owners diligently post every day; very time-consuming to maintain and keep a blog interesting and retain readers/potential customers, although I suppose it's all a part of doing business (it's a lot of sitting!) and it definitely seems a wonderful place of personal reflection and self-expression. Still, I don't see why you couldn't post every other day (instead of every day), if you need a break. Some blogs I enjoy only get a new post once per week but, because they're so good, I always check in. You've proven yourself with an excellent blog; I'd say, enjoy some summer, 'cause most of us will stick with you!

Something didn't come thru on my computer; although I've scrolled back thru the photos three times, I see no black and white window boxes, so I don't know what I'm missing (these that so many of the readers are glowingly speaking of…)!

Beautiful gardens, well done! You're much too critical… we only see the beauty and time invested in maintaining such a lovely garden. You, on the other hand, see what chores have yet to be done!? (reminds me of myself, haha) Your gardens are further along than ours here in Michigan, too!

Your garden looks pretty good to me:) It takes a lot of time and hard work to keep them looking good, mine is suffering from a lack of attention this year mostly because we had such a cold, wet spring. I shall spend the rest of the summer playing catch up and most of the beds need a really good clear out anyway which they are probably not going to get – at least not this year!

You're right. I will say it is a beautiful garden. I posted, I think last week, my low threshold for gardening pain. I used to have a large yard with gardens I worked in all summer. That's a full time job! I trying to accept there is no such thing as perfect. I can look at other gardens and see beauty, I look at mine and I see what I need to fix.
