last of the autumn leaves and wayward dogs

by Sharon Santoni

I was taken for a walk by young Gibson and Sir Ghetto yesterday.  They said I needed to stretch my legs, and added that my lungs could use a little work out, which must have been why they insisted on running away at every bend and forcing me to yell like a madwoman until they returned.

The joys of country living …

I took my camera – of course – and when I wasn’t screaming at my companions I clicked away, at the trees and also at the ground.  You may remember that  I get a bit mesmerised by the patterns of the autumn leaves.

So I happily followed the dogs around, and let them choose our path, according apparently to what smelt the most alluring …so chic …  as I was saying, the joys of country life!

 Now you see us …
 now you don’t ….

Surely I’m not the only one to be manipulated by the four legged members of their family?  Tell me please …[blank]

Liebe Sharon,

No Sharon you are definitely not the only one, you have no idea the amount of times I have been stood at the top of a field or track, screaming like a mad woman, only to see in the far distance deer scattering and running into the forest, followed a few minutes later by Crusoe in hot pursuit at this point I have to give up and finish the walk alone. Fortunately no harm can come to Crusoe as round us it is all country tracks and fields, a short time later Crusoe turns up in the garden, caked in mud and leaves and looking thoroughly pleased with himself!

Yes, our animals run our lives here! and we're getting a golden retriever puppy in January! can't wait- I figure as long as we are fully emerged in animals why not? We have sorely missed a golden since we lost our last one, so we will have an odd pair with a Shih Tzu, and my daughter brings her 2 bulldogs over frequently.
Have a wonderful weeekend.

They both look like best friends enjoying their country walk. But it is true Sharon, sometimes our dogs walk us instead of us walking them. I have been told that by strangers when I walk my dog. Beautiful pictures of Fall here. Good thing you brought your camera along.

I spent Thanksgiving at home, alone, with my English Bulldog, Tallulah. It seems she convinced McGillicuddy, the big orange cat, to knock a block of cheese off the counter to her as she waited on the floor. Extreme tummy upset ensued. Two days.
I received a few calls from Grandma's house on Thanksgiving,so I wouldn't feel left out but mostly I cleaned up after Tallulah.

It is staggering to consider how each and every leaf is unique, just like snowflakes, fingerprints, butterfly wings, zebra stripes … Amazing! And oh yes about the furball. After 18 years together, my little (best) friend passed away a few months ago .. any "mischief" pales in comparison to how much I wish she was still here. xo

This looks like it is right out of a story book! What a lovely place to walk dogs… and what darling rascals!

Beautiful photos! I always love posts with the dogs in them. 😉

I have a Siberian cat 'Kilmouski'. The breed is very dog like. He knows how to shake hands and sit, sit-up and lie down. He knows other phrases like… Want to go out, Let's go, cookie and many more. He always comes when I call him.

On the other hand, I know a bit of meow. He is rather bossy telling me it's time for me to go to bed, go get HIS chair. That is so he can sit next to me while I work.

Hi Sharon,
It appears Sir Ghetto has taken to posing as well as Gibson! Those two are so full of personality, it's precious. I'm loving your photos of the leaves, simple beauty…and so you!

Sharon,
Most definitely our dogs run our lives…even here in the suburbs. They would dearly love to run and be dogs as yours get to. Ours have nowhere to just run and be dogs (we don't do dog parks as they are not "safe"). OUrs would love a pond or lake as well and could certainly use it. OUr Belle had surgery on her knee 2 months ago and poor thing is still on a leashe even in the house to keep her from doing anything "stupid" so it can heal. Someday maybe we will get our place in the country…..

Sharon,

Ghetto and Gibson are so adorable I can't imagine seeing one without the other. They seem to be like two peas in a pod. I love the photos, it's so beautiful there.

Our first dog, used to run off all the time. I can't tell you the number of times he took of when not on a lease and we had to chase him all over the place. He thought it was a game and the more we ran after him the more he would run. It seems so funny to me now but at the time quite irritating. Ha

Have a great weekend! 🙂

I miss my dogs so much. We have lost them all now. We came to France with two Labradors, golden mother & her daughter was black. Then the daughter had pups so we just had to keep one. So then there were three! What fun we had walking our dogs through our own land just like the photos you've shown. None of them ever walked on leads, no need to in the country. The golden Lab became the village dog, she would start the walk us, get so far & thought 'nah ! I'm not going there again' & would turn round & go back to the house or someone else's to wait for us to return. Great characters , just like your Ghetto & Gibson. Love your post. The photos say it all. Enjoy your weekend. Barbara Lilian.

Oh dear! Not minding my own business, yet again! You simply MUST adopt some more! In the US there is the most horrific "overpopulation" of orphan dogs! The combination of people breeding; the recession, and the storm!

"Lab rescue; even "Corgi mix rescue"!

Oh please! People who love dogs like you do; there are the most wonderful dogs being euthanized every day!

PLEASE!!

Go on "Petfinders" these volunteers give their heart and soul to help find homes for these divine dogs!

There's nothing better than a beautiful fall day in the woods with the dogs. I live with my dog Neenah, a rescue Husky/collie mix, with crystal clear blue eyes.
In reality, I live FOR Neenah – she has me around to pay the mortgage, groom her, feed her, walk her, drive her around for errands. But what a joy she brings me. It's been years since I am down to only one dog, and honestly I had forgotten the strong bond that can develop in a one-on-one dog relationship. We communicate now with body language more than commands. She knows my every mood, and I know hers. What a wonderful companion she has become…

Boys just gotta be boys! The dogs are cute and Dylan dog just took his Dad on a five mile dash through the woods since he was on the scent of something. Dylan had a great time, Dad not so much!

Oh gosh. I have a route that I take, and I KNOW the house along the way is thinking to itself, "there's that annoying woman walking Bernard again" because even though they have never met me or my dog, they hear me shrieking, "BERNARD!!! COME HERE BERNARD!!! BERNARD!!!" till I'm hoarse whenever we go that way. (Bernard is a terrier, by the way) I have two dachshunds as well, but they stay on leashes, because if they went off leashes, calling them would be pointless. BERNARD also says shrieking is good for me. I guess it's something they (the dogs) all know about through the group unconscious, like which end of a new friend to sniff first, and how to pee in the most inappropriate place at any given time….

We have three, large dogs who love to go for walks. Autumn is the time when they feel their best and run hither and yon chasing smells. When we get home, it is time for a nice rest.

I cannot count the many times my cairn terrier has run off, allured by something smelling irrestistably intereresting, invariably finding her own way home while the whole family were still desperately searching for her. Now she has calmed down, lazing away her nine year old days in any soft, cosy piece of furniture she can find! Love your blog, by the way!

Your dogs look so happy, running through the woods! The leaves are beautiful but I can imagine that chasing after and yelling for your four-legged pals was a bit exhausting! Not living in the country, I've always had to keep my dogs on leashes. I'd have probably gotten a better workout if I had to chase them LOL Hugs, Leena

Our lab dog is almost 8 and he loves to go for walks in the woods and will find all manner of things to sniff and eat and chew on. I can usually entice him to follow me back inside with the promise of dinner. Lovely pictures.
