what would you do with a thousand?!

by Sharon Santoni

The winter sales are on here, and it seems to be the time of year when everyone is thinking about their budget.   At the dinner table last night I was chatting with the children.  I’m not sure how we got there, but conversation came around to “what would you do with a thousand euros, dollars or pounds?”

A thousand is just a nice sum to play with.  Not so big that it makes you feel responsible, yet big enough to make a purchase feel special, a splurge, a treat.  The kids responses were most diverse, ranging from a new drum set, to a zoom lens to some pearl earrings – Ghetto just wanted lots of  chickens …. ahem …
After scratching my head for a while I thought I’d really love a special suitcase, that looks old fashioned and well made but that can actually cope with today’s travel,  that makes me feel good every time I unpack it, or pick it up in an airport.
[blank]And I wondered what your answer would be?
So here’s the game …. imagine I have a thousand  dollars, euros or pounds for you to play with.  To spend on a gift just for you.  This is your special selfish moment, forget about your children, husband, your dogs and your Great Aunt Sybil … this is for YOU!
Would you book yourself into a spa, buy an air ticket to Rome, get that ring you’ve been dreaming of …  or maybe you’d  purchase a year’s worth of luxury chocolates delivered to your door ….
Surprise me please … I am intrigued[blank]

PS  there are so many wonderful ideas coming in here, from rose bushes, to Hermes handbags to lunch at Le Meurice ….  keeping the post up for a few more hours to see what else you come up with![blank]

I wouldn't want anything that would be used up or worn out…no, I would buy something that would still be around long after I'm gone…a beautiful little table perhaps.

What a great post…with $1000, I think I would do a weekend trip & stay at your guest cottage – airfare & stay might come into that amount. It would be memorable for sure than any material posession. Those things come & go but a trip stays in mind forever.

I live in a great main street little town on Long Island NY. I think I would walk into town and have a day of hair and makeup, go to the bookstore, have a nice lunch with my dh or a friend. Or I would take my entire family (6) to a Broadway play and out to Dinner. Oh dear I see I have spent all the money!

Nothing right now really tickles my fancy…maybe a trip to Anchorage, Alaska to watch the Opening of the Iditarot Race in March…touted as the Last Great Race on Earth. I've been to Alaska in the Spring and Summer, never had the urge to go in Winter, unless it's to watch the Race. This is a fun post. Thanks Sharon!

When it comes to spending money on myself I always have difficulty. But then if I had 1000 euros just to spend on ME, I could be extravagant and buy a beautiful silk nightgown & luxurious underwear, something I've never done.

Amazing how I was just dreaming about a wonderful purchase that I could make recently. I love travel, but I work part-time for an airline, so I have those benefits. If not, it would be for travel. But I have other loves and one is collecting great perfumes, especially those that are vintage or have been discontinued. One that I have desired lately is Hermes Doblis. I know where I can purchase a vintage quarter of a bottle of $750 and the remainder would go for pretty shoes or a memorable dinner with great wine!

I would buy shrubs, flower bulbs, vintage rose bushes, and a small tree for my front yard. These would be cover for the songbirds we feed, and for our squirrels to enjoy.

Ah Sharon! I would head straight to a parfumerie in Paris of course! and treat myself to a few bottles of wonderful Serge Lutens parfume plus body lotions and a few of those pretty little bottles of pure essence to dab discreetly behind ears ….. as French women do. Then I would take my sisters to lunch at Le Meurice on Rue de Rivoli. Just dreaming!

Have my poor teeth fixed as there is budget for that on our fixed income and the costs have become 'out of this world'. Take my sugar of 60 years to dinner. Save the rest for a rainy day as after the sunshine comes the rain, n'est-ce pas?

I'd like to say I'd go to Paris, but I turn fifty in a few months, and it's weighing on me. I would go to the dermatologist and gat every Botox, lazer and peal she recommended and arrive at 50 looking fabulous. My second choice would be using the money to do some really special entertaining this summer, maybe some live music at a backyard BBQ, create a German beer hall in October,

If it's just for fun stuff (meaning no bills that are screaming to be paid, which is what I SHOULD use it for 🙂 )…then maybe I would get a new set of sheets for my bed, towels for my bath and a nice new nightie, robe and slippers. They are daily necessities that I often delay replacing because of the cost.

Well I can't afford to buy books so first stop would be my Amazon wish list of several hundred books to have great fun choosing and then parcels to open and then a pile of brand new books by my bedside. Some of course would be Kindle versions but mainly real books. I would probably spend about half on that then with the other half I would be able to not just browse at all the wonderful brocantes in the area of the Dordogne where I live but buy beautiful things for the home, linen, antique books, silver cutlery. I would also buy some peonies for the garden.

I would buy two truckloads of flagstone ($400.00), a load of sand (50.00), a load of gravel(75.00), hire two students and create two flagstone patios to enhance the front and back entrances of my tiny 1830's retirement home. Some people take up knitting, I decided to create the little home of my dreams. Yet, the entrances are sadly lacking and hence my dreams of flagstones and flowers!
