the first loot shoot of May

by Sharon Santoni
[blank]No clients this weekend , so I indulged in
a little solitary shopping and brought home a few nice bits.[blank]

[blank] Here is my loot, kindly modelled by Gibson, and prettied up with some of the plants that I found at the garden fair yesterday.  Just love these collectors’ Aquilegia; although I’m not sure whether they’ll stay true to their ‘breed’ in the years to come – anybody any experience with that?[blank]
[blank]

[blank]Very happy to have found a few sweet paintings, some old fruit stacking trays; cool turquoise books; candlesticks and some copper and brass ….   [blank]

[blank]out alone…
… back here for a family breakfast …
…happy days[blank]

What beautiful finds. My favorite are the pitcher, the painting of the ships and that sweet dog. You can't find dogs like that at the sales around here.

Oooh you found some wonderful things. I bet it was nice to have a Sunday to yourself.

Nothing like a gravel pillow to lay your head on after a tough day shopping with mum.

My horticulture professor told us Acquilegia was infamous about NOT keeping their true colors if they had been hybridized. Good luck, I'm not speaking from experience!

Gibson, you look so contented! Yesterday I got to cuddle and pet a couple of very cute dogs when I was sitting outside a café here in Eugene, OR. One was a very clean white and ginger-colored pommeranian that had a puppy clip and looked just like a miniature fox! Ruby was a gingerbread cocker spaniel that loved to have her ears and topknot finger-combed. You would have enjoyed them, too, Gibson, I'm sure Ghetto wouldn't have minded!

Maybe one of those paintings is a long lost study for a masterpiece by a great landscape painter or by Monet. Just sayin'. They are pretty no matter what and your dog is too.

I wonder what in the world that copper pan would have been used for? Spaetzel?

I have Japanese Aquilegias and they've kept their breed well. If you're afraid that those Aquilegias can be mixed, you can plant them far from each others. Your dog is so cute!

Hey Sharon,

the previous poster was correct in saying that Columbines are famous (or notorious, I suppose, if you happen to a control-freak) for hybridizing with each other. So, you'd do well to ASSUME that yours (or, more precisely, their offspring) won't flower "true" for more than a year or two or maybe-three….at which time the original plants will probably die anyway, since Columbines (as yet another poster mentioned) generally aren't long-lived. They re-seed like mad, though, so you're never without them (at least not in this temperate climate) once you've planted a couple.

Mine just come up everywhere (between flagstones or anywhere the rain washes the seeds, which are TINY). I don't at all mind their straying around the place; nothing gives a more natural "feel" than cornflowers, columbines, and daisies (yup…just old wild kind, thank you) seeding themselves where they please.

Where I'm from (the mountains in Tennessee), red columbines are native and grow EVERYwhere. They're lovely.

Beautiful loot! I agree with Kukkaiselämää; plant your columbines far apart to reduce the risk of cross-pollination. If you are very keen to keep them true, you might also try collecting seed each year from the ones that seem to stay true. You can't be sure about the results until the following year, but it's worth a try.

Aquilegias, probably more than most of the hybrids, are very fickle. At most they stay true for a couple of years, but arr not long-lived anyway. They are a short term perennial, but re-seed like mad. They will eventually revert to an earlier form, but there are many readily available in several "series" that look like yours.

Oh how I love the Columbine, as you refer to Aquilegia. It is the state flower of my beloved Colorado. They grow wild in the mountains there. I had some in my yard & some years they came back & other years not. Mine were mostly the color of a very light blueish-lavender. I love you loot choices. XO

Isn't that a bedwarmer where they would put coals inside and run it under the covers on the sheets to warm them up?

Awwww…love that sweet face, Gibson is such a handsome feller. I enjoy perusing your finds from the loot shoot. The old books get me everytime. They remind me of my grandparents attic with musty old journals, books, magazines, maps….

Wild Columbine are profuse in the Oregon mountains too, and they (along with Lupine) are particularly beautiful! I've had limited success growing either in my semi-shady garden here at sea level. If you are fortunate enough to live in a climate, and have the sun exposure, in which Columbine thrives, I'd encourage you to plant a bunch and let them re-seed to populate as much of your garden as possible…you won't be sorry! On your question about them staying true to breed, I accede to David's expertie.

Your loot is charming, every bit of it. And Gibson…he makes everything look even better! What a wonderful dog… Amitiés, Leslie

Well…my goodness, Sharon….

I've just read all these responses, and you've finally got me to thinking that I ought to start a blog of my own.

All you have to do is to ask a question ( I generally have a LOT of them), and you immediately get at least twelve well-informed answers????…..

Not entirely by-the-way?….have you ever sat down and mapped-out, so to speak, where all of your fans/readers live?

I've got to say that I find amusing to consider that your fans/reader seem to live everywhere between Seattle & Sydney (going in both directions), but the ONLY folks who never write or appear in/on your blog are the ones who actually live with you.

Good for you…..a true lady is always marked by a innate (sp?) sense of discretion regarding her household matters.
