taming the rambling rose

by Sharon Santoni

[blank]I apologise if the blog is a tad flowery at the moment, but hey!  it is June after all, and Normandy is at its most fragrant time of year.[blank]

Our climbing rose in the middle of the garden has exploded this week, and although I know it is difficult to use the flowers in an arrangement, I thought I’d have a go …[blank]
[blank]
[blank]I placed one large and two smaller vases on my mantelpiece, and cut branches of various lengths from the fragrant rose.[blank]
[blank]This exercise could be more accurately described as a balancing act than as a flower arrangement.  Those rose branches have a will of their own, and persuading them to face the right way required …. patience![blank]
[blank]The dogs, in the meantime, feigned indifference to the rose bush lighting up the garden behind them, and faced with my resistance to their pleas to go for a walk, they lost the will to protest and fell asleep on the terrace![blank]

Your blog is a breath of beautiful fresh air! I read it when I am feeling a little overwhelmed with the chaos of the day. Although, thanks to all that I am learning about French culture, I am trying to make that daily chaos a little less overwhelming : )

OMG Sharon this is so beautiful. Climbing white roses I love, it takes me back to my childhood mum planted a small flowered white climbing rose the scent was of apple blossom. When I look at your bouquet I imagine it smells of apple blossom. I have Pierre De Ronsard climbing on our fence it's beautiful but it's just not the same. I'm still searching. The dogs look so content… The roses, the painting, your lounge room and the garden…absolutely beautiful. Till next time Regards Esther from Sydney. PS thank you for sharing its alway a delight to click on your blog.

O'k, first you got me thinking about forcing peonies, (which I did!) and now bringing in wild roses….yippee!

Sharon
What a gorgeous living room – you have been holding out on us! I wonder if you could tell me about the gorgeous stone wall around your house? Does it go all the way around? How high is it? I am a major gardener and I am despairing of the deer here in America – they are decimating EVERYTHING! And I even have deer fencing. I am contemplating a MAJOR money investment in a proper 7-8' fence around my entire 2 acres but am feeling stressed as it will be the price of a new car! Help – any insight into your lovely wall and wondering if you have deer predators that come right up to the house?

Please, PLEASE keep the flowers coming. I'm in Southern California right now, and it is like a desert. You have no idea how much I miss the flowers in France. Your posts are like a little taste of heaven.

This is one of my favorite posts. I know I say that each post. I love your flowers, the painting, and your room. And to top it off, the dogs. I tell my sister I have adopted two virtual dogs, one is patient and one is a rascal. My family is very confused.

The sheer luxury of all those roses is enriching. Flowers are so much easier to live with — the formal green meatballs in pots can look elegant, but they don't inspire much relaxation. Thanks so much for these pictures.

How wonderful!
I love it when my roses climb up into the trees! some people think I am insane!!

How gorgeous to look up and see roses blooming up in the top of tall oak trees!
I will have to show them in a post!

Jeekers!

So lovely your roses climbing and looking so lush and healthy.
Mom used to have roses climbing in tree, seems like a natural.
I like how the dogs are resting on the steps in the ready just in case you change your mind and take them for a walk. so cute.
You have very pretty room and mantle.

Your posts are so gorgeous…they brighten my day!! My roses are in full bloom and are beautiful but I would never attempt the cut them and bring them inside.

I was going to ask the same as Linda (above) about the painting – it is beautiful…can you tell us more about it?
