Dressing for a Paris fashion show

by Sharon Santoni

OK, so I know this is not a big problem on a world scale, but I have been invited to a fashion show in Paris at the end of the month, and I really, but really do not know what to wear.

If you follow this blog, you’ll have understood a long time back that I am a fairly simple girl, and that although I love to go to Paris or to a party and dress up when required, I do actually spend most days in jeans and a nice jumper.    I can dress up or dress down for occasions that are familiar to me, but this one is taking me outside my comfort zone.

Visions of Meryl Streep playing Anna Wintour keep flashing in front of me and I can already feel the disapproving glances of the women I shall meet there, who live and breathe fashion and have no time for country girls like me.

So I wondered what you would do if you were me?

…..  Not go?   no, that is not an option, a girlfriend has moved heaven and earth to get invites for the show, and got one for me as a surprise gift.

…..  Play super safe; I’m bound to fail the fashion test anyway so why spend time and money aiming for the impossible?

….. Hit the sales that have just started here and buy a couple of accent pieces that would boost my self confidence without endangering my financial stability?

….  wear super high heels so that at least I won’t be looked down on physically as well as morally?!  oh yeah, and dark glasses too so they can’t see the fear in my eyes!

….. watch non-stop videos of Garance Doré and hope that some of her nonchalant  fashion savvy will sink in before I go to the show?

The truth is I am looking forward to it; I haven’t been to a show for years and I know it will be dazzling.   But can you feel my angst here?    I’d hate to let my girlfriend down!

So I wondered how you cope when you are heading into an unfamiliar situation.  Or how you manage at work when you need to assert yourself.  Are your clothes really key in helping you play the role, or do you simply rely on your character, presence and professional knowledge to get you through any situation.

So tell me, please, you know I’d love to know.

I would definitely buy something new let it be the smallest piece
and enjoy the view of the show as well as the audience.Dorka staying in the Plain in Hungary in boots and jeans wishing you an unique enjoyment.www.dorottyaudvar.co.hu

Well thanks for the vote of confidence Cheryl, but I don’t think I have quite enough to do the jean / biker thing 🙂

I, too, like outfit #1. But then #2 is so sleek and simple. You can’t go wrong either way. Just throw caution to the wind, wear what you feel best in and have a fabulous time!

No 1 is my favourite, but that’s because of the colours and the flow of the pants … since I don’t actually possess any of the clothes in the pictures, the discussion remains purely theoritcal 🙂

Truth is; what you wear, matters!
You’ll be comfortable and chic if you keep things simple. A fitted cashmere sweater? Maxi/midi dress? A great vintage coat with fur collar? All black with those leopard shoes?

I know it matters Marybeth, hence the angst!

Well, I would kill for that gorgeous little cream and black jacket in version one. Team it with the nude bag and shoes which will suit your hair colour. But I’m not sure about the trousers – are they metallic/shimmery? I think tapered tailored black or charcoal grey trousers would look better.

Is it a sit-down runway show or a walk-five-miles fashion show? If it’s the latter take some flats and make sure your trousers are ankle length so they don’t drag on the floor if you have to change shoes. Bin-there-done-that many years ago.

How do I cope now? I’d wear a LBD or black trousers with a biker jacket with a designer scarf (Liberty/Jaeger/YSL), and always a good haircut and manicured nails.

Unless you’re in the front row along with Anna and the movie stars you’ll mostly be seen from the top of the head down to near waist level. You could do what businesswomen or professionals usually do who have to attend major meetings: concentrate on good hair and understated make-up with a flattering lip colour, a great jacket/top with a good plain button down shirt (or a fine lightweight cashmere pullover)and a fabulous designer scarf or chunky necklace or beautiful brooch. Then you can just wear either simple well cut matching pants or skirt just below the knee and mid heels (though have to say I love those leopard heels – they remind me of Adelaide Villa’s Heidi and her fantastic D and G leopards). Top it off with your favourite perfume.

Have fun and relax, the pressure is on the front row people to dress to perfection and latest styles. They have to face the cameras zooming in on their faces, tops, skirts, legs and shoes, it’s not on the women who go for fun (unless they overdo it and become fashion victims). Don’t try too hard. Have a great time with your friend viewing the fashions and especially, people watching! Best wishes, Pamela

Clothes will definitely give you the confidence to hold your head high, heels or no. But don’t break the bank. Go with classic basic’s then add a little current flair for that extra boost of fashion and confidence! Remember wearing a smile is the best accessory.

I think if you are going to buy something, to make sure it will be a treasure of yours forever. I personally would wear something classic and black for January. I would probably put an hermes scarf, a big bracelet and then maybe do your investing in a new bag and shoes that turn that classic and plain black into STUNNING. And I agree with other writers… a good haircut and pretty nails. You are beautiful whatever you do. I hope this helps!

When I am concerned about being out of my comfort zone I wear black and add a statement piece with it. A eye catching necklace, scarf or vintage jacket. New shoes are a must. Wear your self confidence and gentle smile. Enjoy.

I look forward to hearing about the fashion date.

You seem to have forgotten the crucial element–confidence. 🙂 It really doesn’t matter what you wear to these events as long as you radiate confidence. With that said, I recommend a base of something fairly classic, with a fun eye-catching piece like a pin or scarf you really like. Have a great event!

Reply
Sharon Santoni January 10, 2014 - 7:27 pm

It’s not that I forgot it , it’s rather that this is the sort of event where my confidence drains from me like water from a bathtub, but hey! I can always pretend!

Think of it as a different kind of fence, a bit different than others perhaps, but one you have the skills and experience to jump. You will glow with self-esteem and accomplishment — people will be whispering behind their programs, “Who is that frightfully gorgeous woman???”

Have fun.

Gosh…the two outfits above are to die for! And you’re feeling insecure about this? Looks like you’ve got it nailed, girl! My two suggestions: a smile, and the best little high heel helpers ever invented (https://www.amazon.com/Foot-Petals-Killer-Kushionz-3-Pair/dp/B007519V6G/ref=cts_sh_2_fbt). I tend toward simplicity, too – jeans , sweaters, loafers in chilly weather – so when I don heels, I’m usually close to tears within fifteen minutes. These little stick-ons have saved me many a tear. Have fun!

I know all of us would like a fairy godmother with a closet of vintage classics as you did in your wonderful story. But short of that, I agree with the others, Classic is best. Long ago, I realized I will never be the best dressed or on trend because that is not how I choose to spend my money. I would go for the LBD, a jacket and a statement scarf or neckless. I love the leopard shoe.
Have fun and smile. I can’t wait to read about the event.

Wear what makes you feel good. Confidence and a smile are your best accessories. I sat next to Meryl Streep with her daughter and two friends in a restaurant in New York a couple years ago…she definitely was not dressed as a fashion icon, but exuded wonderful charm and a lovely smile. Remember that every woman attending this fashion show is wondering what they should wear… and if anyone is looking down on you for what you are wearing then it’s their problem. I’m quite sure that what you put together is going to be perfect and you and your friend are going to have a fabulous time! I can’t wait to hear and see this show through your eyes.

You will be fine – some of the people at these shows look far too outlandish IMO.

Google a few of the more sensible fashion editors – Alex Shulman, Justine Picardie, Avril Mair – here in UK. Some of them wear black/ navy blazers with jeans/ trousers and white shirt/ T shirt underneath. Heels and a lovely bag complete the look. I would buy one of those large envelope clutches that are around.
I’m a big fan of Justine Picardie – she often wears chanel jackets with jeans and choo slingbacks. She also often wears a dress with black cardigan.

Sounds wonderful – hoping for a full report.

Sharon, first of all, I can only think that you can’t help but look smart no matter what you choose – you may be a “country girl” but it’s clear from your beautiful blog that you have innate style and taste. That said, if I were in your very lucky shoes I would plan to go classic – the tried and true never goes out of style. If you look closely at Anna W. she always sticks to the same formula – a classic dress silhouette that flatters her, typically a print, topped with a cardigan or simple jacket and accessorized with a simple (but statement-y) necklace and low heeled single-sole shoes. So choose your favorite classics so that you feel like you in your clothes and maybe click through some street fashion photos and treat yourself a statement piece that complements – earrings, an amazing jacket, handbag-whatever catches your eye (and that you think you would love to wear no matter how fashion changes). You’ll be gorgeous! Can’t wait to hear more about it! XOXO

And always remember that the most important thing you wear is your SMILE!! Play the part to its fullest and enjoy every minute! Love both looks you chose!

I am going to Paris February 26th to March 5th for fashion week. I too am worried about what to wear, although haven’t an invitation to a fashion show as of yet. To make matters even more anxiety ridden, my three traveling companions are all fashionistas. I’m not. I’m like you, jeans and boots. I do love your examples. I think black is the answer. I’m only packing black with a touch of leopard. Vicky Archer blogged about it too. Black! You can’t go wrong!
Would love to meet you if at all possible Sharon!

It depends first of which fashion show ! My daughter is a model and she knows that according to the designer, the style should be different ! So I really think that somebody who is naturally elegant as you are don’t really has to wonder about that ! whatever you will wear will be nice ! You go there for your pleasure.. not to find a job !!!

Know what? Don’t worry. Unless you’re invited to some major event afterward you will be fine. You have a great sense of style with everything, and I trust your judgement completely. I love the idea of black with leopard, or black with anything else like the killer accessories everyone is speaking about. Just enjoy being with your friends at a once-in-a-lifetime event and breathe it all in. Everyone else will think you are a preferred client of the designer and spend $$$$ ordering 3-4 pieces at each show. I loved this post, Sharon. Love the whimsy. xx’s

You can’t go wrong with classics. Basic nice black trousers (have any gabardine?) with either a silk blouse or shell and a fit jacket. I live in france full time, and you really can’t go wrong with the classic’s, a black tailored trouser (cigarette pant) black tailored jacket with some great detailing, eg good buttons, leather, or standout lining. Wear this with a classic court shoe maybe leopard, snake, patent or tartan (this seasons trend), a white tank or shirt, superb quality worn with a statement necklace nothing else will be required apart from maybe a trench coat in camel or dog tooth check, and don’t forget the Handbag……Hermes if possible or something that makes a statement, enjoy your trip Au revoir xx

Oh!! We are all holding our collective breath waiting for the after story. How fortunate you are, Sharon. Please don’t let angst overshadow your fun. And it seems there is a consensus in the comments: go classic, keep it simple, comfortable shoes, a confident demeanor and a brilliant smile. Who could top that?

A little story, if I may– Years ago, when I was barely 30, we had our first trip to Paris. It was the honeymoon we had never had as poor (very!) students. It was late November, bone chilling cold. We stayed at the Hotel St. Regis, where the very elegant, classically attired proprietor took pity on a pair of American kids, and arranged for us to have dinner at Maxim’s. But first, she shuttled us off to a small street nearby to a fairy tale, magical shop. There another very kind French lady chose for me an exquisite silk and angora sweater with a stand- up lace collar and tiny silk rosettes as buttons at the shoulder, matching lace cuffs. This was lace the likes of which I had never seen– incredible. My sweet husband wanted the shell pink sweater, but Madame gently advised us to select the black, as this sweater would accompany me down the years. Today it is one of my most beloved treasures. Madame also advised me for the future: “The rule that rewards all the stages of your life is to choose an ageless classic, then find something unexpected as an accessory, to make it your statement, fresh with y our own personality.” Often I had short kid gloves. It is always a surprise. Or, at least the doormen are more attentive.

I would echo others: perfect haircut, stunning but subtle make-up, manicure, and your own very abundant natural charm. You will turn heads!

Dear Sharon
I completely understand …my usual confidence turns to bewildered awe at such situations ( I sometimes feel too shy to leave comments as well! )
So here I am…..as we all are I think…… to support you in having a beautiful and fabulous day at the show.
I would start with a getting lovely hairdo… cut, colour.. whatever feels nice
Then treat yourself to a chic new lipstick, your own version of ‘ mon rouge’
If black is your thing ( or even beige, camel, grey etc )…..you cant go wrong with a simple well cut shift dress, your new necklace and I would say the high leopard pumps every time.
Heels give you such a swagger, and leopard will reward you many times over
Id leave the dark glasses behind……..you’ll need full peepers ready for all the people watching !!

Have a really lovely time,

Hello, what a darling blog you did. So I just had to respond. We all have been there (in one way or another) maybe not able to go to a fashion show, but somewhere, that you
just don’t feel like you have it altogether. I think you should find a personal shopper that you connect with and buy an outfit or the pieces that will make your
outfit complete. Accessories, can do wonders and I would wear high heels for sure, it changes you attitude immediately. You could also go to any boutiques that are really smart
and would have someone who would tell the truth and be able to read your style. I do not think you should completely change your look, maybe just
a more sophisticated version of your normal. The outfits below are very chic that you put in your blog. I am so excited to hear how it goes in Paris and how you found what you were going
to wear. If we are lucky, maybe you will show us. I have followed your blog for over a year and send to many friends. France is my most
favorite country and I love the look of your home from the front. Good Luck with everything. I think you will find women that are ready & willing to help, it will so
be fun. I think I would also have my makeup done, looking for some new colors or a updated look that makes you feel wonderful.
All my best,

I was very fortunate in my twenties to attend many designer fashion shows in NYC. My recommendation to you, and this is what I would do… Fabulous shoes, great coat, simple black chic dress, fabulous handbag, beautiful scarf, long fitted leather gloves, simple eye make up with a nice reddish lipstick. Can’t go wrong. You don’t need to spend a fortune on any of these. Keep it simple, clean and chic. Yes, it does matter what you wear. Have a wonderful time! ps. have seen the beautiful soft pink coats being seen on the streets of Paris, I would love one of those!

Wow Sharon now THIS is my kind of dilemma:) How very exciting for you. I love outfit #2, its so classic and chic and how could you not feel like a million dollars in it! When in doubt or when I am venturing a bit out of my comfort zone, I always reach for a black something, I have black cigarette pants that I wear with a variety of black tops or even a short black fitted blazer, load on the jewels and maybe a fun shoe like a leopard pump or a bright colored shoe and smile away for those cameras that will all be wondering who you are:) Not to mention we all know the slimming effects of black…priceless!!!!

Or of course a simple classic sheath dress is always appropriate. Again jewelry can add a lot to the look and you can make it as funky or classic as you want…..whatever you wear something tells me you will shine and have a fabulous time! I am big on great bags and shoes…they are investments but they are important to any outfit. You just feel better when you are wearing a gorgeous pair of shoes and donning a fabulous bag. I hope you will share what you wore and all about this exciting experience!

Sharon – absolutely attend the show but also know that the supposed ” stylemakers” have no taste of their own. They are told what to wear head to toe & donated clothing by editorial friends / designers to promote whatever upcoming trend there is. In your case – you have the freedom to choose & that is a luxury in itself – you hvae no one to please but yourself.
