Finding time to get creative is absolutely vital to my well-being. Sometimes, when things get busy it requires a little ingenuity to make some creative time.
So this week, while listening to a podcast, I had the kitchen to myself and proceeded to make a huge mess. If anyone ever tells you that they decorated easter eggs without making a mess, simply don’t believe them.
To decorate Easter eggs using natural ingredients, you need to chop onions, and red cabbage, use beetroot juice, and maybe cook some spinach. All of this requires multiple pans, lots of steam, and boiling water, and then of course in the middle of this you need space to allow your eggs to dry without rolling onto the floor or touching each other.
Untidy and a tad chaotic, yes, but I loved every minute.
Here is the result. About 20 coloured eggs, some prettier than others, but who sit happily side by side, and work well as Easter table decoration.
I can’t give you any precise instructions for decorating these eggs, but rather I encourage you to have fun, experiment, and be prepared for mixed results.
You may have an advantage over me because I couldn’t find any white eggs. All of these eggs are light brown, to begin with. I have discovered that if you boil brown eggs with onions, then you can generally ‘rub off’ the brown with a household sponge. Don’t ask me why…
To get the pretty leaf patterns, I used parsley leaves and carrot leaves, slightly moistened, and then held in place with nylon tight. This gives a lighter leaf pattern on a coloured egg, or – if you use brown eggs in onions, and scrub them down after boiling – a darker leaf on a light background.
I’d love to know how you are decorating your Easter table this year, and whether you also are happy to make a mess in the kitchen for the sake of getting creative.

Your eggs are beautiful, Sharon. Last year I used natural dyes, inspired by you, I believe, and they were beautiful. I will do the same this week. Being creative is absolutely vital for me, as well. Gardening, table setting, stitching, taking photos, – all these things are opportunities for my creative side. This week I’m sewing up the cutest little fabric Easter baskets for my grandchildren. We will gather on Sunday for dinner and an Easter egg hunt in the garden. Wishing you a Happy Easter.
So pretty. I love all your posts Sharon. Thank you for your creative inspirations.
Thank you for another wonderful post. Your Easter eggs are so charming and absolutely lovely.
You can cut a white potato in half and carve out your design….then use the potatoes to stamp your design
on the eggs. Each stamp can have a different natural dye. Same principle as a woodcut.
Thank you! lovely eggs! I use a lot of onion shells to get deep wine color ๐
When we lived in Switzerland, in the late 70’s, I could not find an egg coloring kit(like they had in the US) My son and I used onion skins. beet juice and spinach to make the dye. It was a wonderful adventure for a 4 year old! He was so very proud to take them to Kindergarten. A wonderful memory!
I do this regularly, so I appreciate that someone else also enjoys it.
Easter greetings Scharon … I also succumbed to the magic of coloring eggs ..
. first I looked for different colors red, blue. green, yellow … but in the end the natural onion won … I didn’t take a picture of the mess in the kitchen …. but it was ..
Many greetings … I really like your blog.
… a total of 30 eggs

I don’t wait long to display Valentine’s decorations because the house does feel empty after Christmas. Thoughtful Valentine’s Day decorations are challenging to find. All year long, I frequently decorate my home with fresh flowers.
This was amazing! Thanks for sharing.
Easter egg hunts are common if there are children around, and I vaguely remember easter baskets being a thing at primary school.
