The blog roll has changed to highlight a new selection of blogs each day and the tags and the search button work better too.
I have to say a huge, enormous thank you to the patient and talented team who helped me put this together – no problem was too big, no detail too small, you guys are my heros!
And – fingers crossed – in a week or so I’ll be welcoming you to the grand re-opening of my brocante store![blank]

Well, congratulations, Sharon. I should say, however, that you have a problem. I’m working on my 3 year-old laptop now
(via the usual “Internet Explorer” browser), and the right-margin, vertical banner ads are, for some reason, blocking-off the right-margins of the comments left by your readers (i.e……I can’t read the last two or three words of every line, although I can read all of the comment if it’s BELOW the right-margin, vertical banner ads).
I do wish there were a way to emphasize words without resorting to shift-caps (which, I gather, means that one is hysterical and screaming).
In any case?… At times such as this, I always call my canny webmistress (who designed my site), and she fixes “it” within two minutes.

I kid you not….she said that. What can one do in the face of such tsunami-proportioned egotism?
So…..I want the give-away. Give it to me. Now. I deserve it more than anyone else. A cursory glance over all previous comments and personal photographs left by your readers will immediately and obviously demonstrate that I am by far the most intelligent, amusing, and physically-attractive person in the whole bunch.

Wonderful new look on the blog! I look forward to your blog posts every day. I just subscribed again (although no notification email?) and will be posting it on my FB page and on Instagram…no tweeting for me though, I can barely keep up with all the blogs, Instagrams and Facebook postings as it is. How I’m expected to work while keeping in touch with the world is beyond me! Winning a week at your cottage and shopping with you (missed that last time!) would just be unbelievable! I’d love to bring my oldest daughter with me to show her beautiful Normandy, buy her some beautiful treasures and make her drive me around, lol. Well, here I am. Posting after months and months of yearning.
Missing France and Normandy, would love to be able to enjoy one of your brocante tours in person rather than vicariously. (Though that is quite special, too.)
Your fall roadway photos are stunning. They look like impressionist paintings.

Oh….just for the record, folks? I’m long-married to a genuine Frenchman (suffice it to say that our biggest problem, so to speak, has been inheriting his grandmother’s very pleasant Paris apartment and his great-aunt’s very elegant 18th century house in Perpignan….when we have no intention of living in either place?). Herve’s parents are still quite healthy/lively (they were just here, visiting for three weeks), but I assume we’ll eventually have to deal with a house in Tours, also. For various reasons, both Herve and I come from families that have always managed to retain their houses, but the current generation (us, to be frank) comprises half the number of folks in the previous generation, which comprised half the number of family member who were kicking around in 1900 or so. Hence, a surfeit of houses.
Sharon knows all of this. I think she’ll agree with me that I can chatter and type-away as furiously as I please……but I don’t get to win anything. Even in this world, that would be too manifestly unfair……if I had any real gumption, I’d hop on a plane, go to the Paris apartment, and vacuum the damn thing. I don’t think anyone’s been it for at least three months (we loan it out regularly to friends and family, as you might guess)
It is awfully fun, though, to imagine some reader’s (preferably someone who’s always dreamed of going to France, but never has been able to do so) winning Sharon’s generously-spirited give-away.
I should emphasize that I grew up in the country….the mountains of East Tennessee. I never visited France until I was 42, and Herve took me there. As was the case for Julia Child and countless others, I was profoundly changed by that very first visit, and I’ve been going regularly since then (2005, to be precise about the matter).
Thanks again to Sharon for all the work (and, yes, I know it’s WORK) involved in creating this lovely blog.

ooooh yes please!!! I have loved your blog for years, and found you through one of my dear friends in ‘real’ life, Jeanne of I Dream Of. I am hoping to come visit there one of these days anyway, so winning your contest would be amazing. 🙂 I tried commenting on your post a few days ago regarding your camera…but it did not work. 🙁 I just bought a new Canon EOS SL1 Rebel, and LOVE it. I had a point and shoot for years, and this is a wonderful step up without getting too ‘serious’. I’ve taken great pictures of family, outdoors, and some of my interior design projects, all with good results. Several professional photographers I know recommended this one for non professionals because it’s super light weight, easy to use and takes gorgeous pictures – either in the automatic settings or using the manual ones. I haven’t figured those out yet…but maybe someday. My husband has the giant Canon 5D, which is the size of a pony. I throw mine in my purse and it’s easy to take with me. Anyway, in case you have not already found your next camera I thought i’d try giving you one more recommendation! (I’m not in any way connected to Canon…)

I am very new to your breath taking blog but I resubscribed (or tried to) but got message I was already subscribed. Just wanted to do what was required. Your header is so breath taking and the fall road photos, exquisite, like I could step into my computer and step out on that road. I’d love to print those photos out for my enjoyment just to look at and dream.

Visiting France has been a life long dream of mine, it may be a calling of the blood as my great-grandparents would have said…we have a many Huguenots “in the woodpile” of my family, dating back to the seventeenth century and later. My grandparents always made sure we knew of our history since Louisville Kentucky is, after all named for King Louis!

We will have such fun, won’t we?
This will happen once you publicly announce that I am The Winner, and all of these other chattering, furiously-typing, and obviously SELFISH readers are, inevitably and as pre-ordained (I really do sense this in my deepest heart) losers.
No doubt there will be a great wailing and gnashing of middle-aged teeth, but that should not bother us; we will have far more delightful prospects to contemplate. In any case, Being Designated A Loser will, I sincerely hope, serve as an all too obviously necessitated corrective to these many readers of yours who selfishly hope to win the give-away for THEMSELVES. Their bourgeoise self-absorption is beyond revolting and unavoidably disgusting.
I should say, since I wish to cause you as little inconvenience as possible, that I will be bringing my own little dogs with me. Neither they nor I enjoy the presence of large, non-pedigreed dogs about us, so it will of course be for the best (in fact, strictly necessary) for you to board those two dogs of yours during my stay. I do not mind LOOKING at horses, but you will understand that they must be kept FAR away from the actual house. I do not enjoy smells.
Additionally, while I certainly adore children and adolescents, I simply cannot abide their physical presence (my nerves are delicate, and children are so very loud). So, I assume you will agree with me that it will be best to board these children of yours, also. Perhaps your husband can go to visit his family? Tell him to do so. It should be no trouble whatsoever to send all of them away for the short while that I have the time to grace your household.
I really prefer that my stay at Maison de la Santoni be an entirely peaceful one for me. I do need my rest, you know; life is very stressful for me in a world filled with such selfish, ignorant, and generally low-born and ill-tempered people.
I will ask my little secretary to send you the pre-prepared list of my multiple allergies, sensitivities, and preferences regarding my meals (schedule, content, etcetera). I do like to eat little snacks throughout the day, by the way. I’ll have her also send you the list of what I enjoy (and also REQUIRE, in order to keep my strength up…I have a very obliging doctor who has agreed with me that I must have everything the way I want it. I am fortunate in having discovered a doctor who truly understands my delicate consitution and artistic temperament).
You will also be receiving a list (including convenient internet “links”) so that you may purchase the very particular sheets I always require (and, no, I do not sleep on anything previously used by God-knows-whom), the wines I happen to enjoy, the CD’s I would like to have played during my stay, and various French celebrities & dignitaries whom Iwould like to have introduced to me during my stay in Normandy. I would particularly like to meet both Catherine Deneuve and our current representative of the Anglican communion/Church of England in France; this would provide me with an opportunity to examine him and determine if he proceeds according to the strictest of ecclesiastical traditions. I would like to tell HER (vile, cinema-bedazzled strumpet that she so obviously is) what I think of her subsequently re-marrying after a divorce from a still-living former-spouse. She should be ASHAMED of herself, and I intend to let her know that.
I think that will be all for now. I will write more over the coming days as I think of other things I would like for you to do for me and further arrangements/provisions that will be necessary for my complete physical and psychological comfort during my stay at “your” French Country Home.
We’ll have such fun……don’t you agree? I know that we’ll become the best of friends once you understand how thoroughly it simply is Best For Everyone if things are arranged in such a way as to please me.

I love these characters in Dickens and Thackeray; they do, in the end, always turn out to have aristocratic connections…..but those “connections” always turn out to be the sister of a great-grandmother who married the stepson of an earl’s younger brother.
So?….I wouldn’t bother responding to “The Rev. Dr. David Terry” if I were you. Next thing you know, he’ll be high-handedly requesting your bank-card numbers so that he can transfer some cash (unfortunately held up by those fools at the Nigerian branch of Cartier’s, who owe it to him) to YOUR account.

Dr. mind you, but the David Charles Terry himself. Sharon, I just came back from Paris but did not get to the flea market/brocante this time around. There was a Brocante weekend in the Village of St Paul, just at the end of the street we lived on but did not have time to tuck in and seek out a treasure(s). I do not know if it is the history and stories surrounding an object that has become timeless in design or, how a beautiful object that has a well worn hue and patina, that can, if placed well in a room, draws you in and invites you to stay. A friend and I have a standing date on Friday mornings to go flea market shopping. Afterwards we “unveil” to one another our finds. That is the second half of our adventure. Seeing what each of us were drawn to and the reason behind our choices. I know we would both LOVE the adventure you are offering, if we were to be your guests in YOUR FRENCH COUNTRY GUEST COTTAGE.

Brand new news from us!! I surprised my husband with a Viking River cruise on the south of France and then we are going to Paris and London for several days each. This is happening in March, starting the 22 and running into early April. It’s his 60th birthday and he’s made several AMAZING accomplishments this year so, I wanted to surprise him!! He knows and is really excited!! He’s always wanted to go on a River cruise and by the time we got our nieces to committ this is what we were able to manage.
So, I’m sure there would be a time we could try to meet if you would be able to……I’d love to finally meet you!!
We are at our little cottage on the shores of the Chesapeake in Queenstown, MD this weekend. We’ve been trying to get it “livable” and cozy for the holidays. It’s. Sweet Cape Cod cottage with dormers upstairs and all the great bones of an older house!!
Thanksgiving is late this year and we are going to Michael’s family in Virginia. It should be great fun …….. I get to see my sweet 21 year old niece home from her last year of college!!
I’ll be thinking of you and hoping you are enjoying the harvest season and all the preparations of Christmas to come!! <3

I left a message before but never saw it posted, but as I said in my last comment, I am new to this blogging world and yours is the first blog I have subscribed to and maybe I messed up. I have seen every entry of French Country and you do an amazing job. My passions are similar to yours, family, antiques, nature, horses and dogs. I ride in the forests too, but in a western saddle! My husband and I rode horses through Burgundy for our honeymoon many years ago and it is still our favorite trip! It would be great to visit your farm.
Your blogs new look is great and it was even my favorite before. I have even asked my staff at the magazine (Vail Valley Magazine) where I work, to design a blog like yours depicting our mountain lifestyle. I hope you don’t mind. I love waking up to
