Copper in the Kitchen

by ally redmond

Since we became empty nesters, our house has slowly morphed from a bustling, noisy family hub to a slightly more sedate home for two.  And maybe its in the kitchen that this is the most visible – less requirement for oversized pans and endless bags of shopping, more time for  us.  Where our family schedule used to hang on the wall, we now have art.  The way we use the kitchen has changed too.  As well as being the place to prepare our meals, we can now indulge the aesthetic side in a way that wasn’t so easy when the family was younger.

When we redid the kitchen a few years ago, we bought a Lacanche stove and absolutely love it. Not only for the look of it and the design, but also for its sheer cooking power.  We gave it a steel splash-back, and I decided to use this space to store and show some copper bits that we love to use. Nothing tips off a French kitchen like an incredibly beautiful and practical set of copper cookware.

For those of you who may not know,  four times a year – in collaboration with My Stylish French Box and My French Country Magazine – we highlight an inspiring French brand as our “Artisans of France,” partnering with them to share with you a limited-edition collection for an exclusive price.

This past quarter,  we partnered with Atelier du Cuivre, one of the oldest creators and restorers of copper goods in France. Atelier du Cuivre uses centuries-old techniques to create gorgeous, timeless copper pans and utensils. For our magazine feature, we paid a visit to their atelier and showroom in Normandy (to see the feature, head over to the digital version of the May/June 20 issue of MFCH Magazine!).

As a result, we were happy to include two copper collections through the MFCH boutique to add a French touch to your kitchen (each item can also be purchased separately). Be it the small pan, frying pan, or their beautiful bain-marie (which I love to use to melt chocolate or make sauces), each piece is as pretty as it is useful.

Be still my heart– copper and a Lacanche! I have a couple of old pans that need retinning, and you’ve inspired me to dig them out for repair. I had forgotten how simply wonderful it is to cook with copper.
If you’ve ever inclined to go into a bit of detail, it would be interesting to read your comments on what it’s like to cook on a high-powered professional stove rather than a household one.

I purchased the bain-marie and love it. And yes, it is to melt chocolate in. Would love to have you offer more pieces.
Many thanks.
