When our children were younger, we loved to head to the mountains during their winter school holidays. We were keen for them to learn to ski, and we all revelled in the mountain ski station atmosphere. The French do skiing and après ski extremely well. The slopes are dotted with wooden chalets, often doubling as restaurants or cafés for that all-important refuelling stop. And staying in a chalet meant for a cosy, warm atmosphere each evening, as we shared a cheese fondue, and headed to bed early.
Today, we ski less often (I’m a dreadful skier, but I’m always here for the après ski!), but I still love the mountains. And as we approach the winter season, it’s the perfect time to embrace the warmth and charm of a French Alpine retreat. He was still stationed in the military at the time, so it was a short honeymoon. However, it was a dream come true. So many happy memories!
