a house to dream about

by Sharon Santoni
We have moved our horses to greener  pastures for the summer, which makes them extremely happy  … and fat, so that’s all good.   For me this means a long bike ride, or ten minutes in the car to go and check on them each day.
I drive along the valley, following the river, and always slow down at one particular village where there’s a house that makes me dream.
old, ivy-covered home on a river
The property looks pretty old to me, maybe older than ours, I should guess at least 180 years.  I don’t know the owners, and I’ve never been inside but I always feel compelled to stop and gaze.  As you know, I have a secret longing to live beside water.

Somebody has planted two tall cypress trees rather too close to the corners of the house, and then forgotten to keep the virginia creeper under control, but don’t you think the whole thing is so romantic?   Of an evening, the light beside the river is beautifully soft, the garden is quite big with an old outbuilding at the end.

There are signs of people coming now and again, but I don’t think it’s lived in full time.  I’m afraid I didn’t even ask permission to show you these pictures, so I hope I don’t get into trouble…!

The house looks across the river to this view.  A small road with a couple of very attractive houses sheltered behind tall gates.

covered gateway with hydrangeas in front
And at the  end of the road, leading into the village is this rather sweet house; small, neglected and …….

FOR SALE – any takers?!

Sharon, I really like the way you stop amidst the chores of life . . . to notice what is around you and to enjoy it. And then thanks for also taking the time to share it with us.

Fondly,
Glenda

Absolutely gorgeous!!

I've only been to France a few times for vacations. And yet, when I see pictures like these I miss it like it was my hometown.

I see photos like that and I just want to "dig in". Either place would be fine with me but I think the first could transform me into a REAL princess.

Your beautiful pictures .. make it so tempting to have an "Under the Tuscan Sun" moment and pack for France (instead of Italy..).. Hubby and I are considering the purchase of a property on another continent … and you make it very tempting to get on plane.. wonder how much they are asking??? … HHL

I would so love that wee little neglected cottage. Looks like bliss to me.

How fortunate that you were able to meet a blogging friend. I had the same encounter this summer and it was like meeting an old and dear friend.

We are finally back from ou 6 weeks in the States and now that I am back at my own computer, I can follow your blog. Best wishes, Tammy

The pictures are amazing of that house near the water. I grew up living
right next to a river and it is so peaceful to hear the rushing water and
See the oaters and other wild life come to drink or relax at the river's edge.
Our house was on stilts because the river would flood in the winter time,
so on the sides we had Ivy climbing up the house and it was so beautiful,
It kind of reminds me of this house you are showing us. I just love your
blog.

have a great weekend!

MOTH would have the secetaurs out pronto Sharon! All that overgrown ivy around the windows must keep the upstairs rooms somewhat dark & dingy. It's a house ready to become part of a fairy-tale book.

I've been doing genealogy research and find I have quite a few french ancestors. Maybe the house across the river is my 'ancestral home'! Dream on! I'm a first time visitor to your blog and am loving it!

Also new to your site, loveeee it! We're selling our home,to move to warmer weather. Maybe a dream house beside a river.I think the hubby would go for it, if he knew someone like you, to help and trust!! What would your educated guess,on a price for the river house? I love to watch "house hunters international" on HGTV, but don't always see the right countrys!!!!

Great house! We built our dream house on our own. In cooperation with a real estate development company, we used the product https://www.estabild.com/ to reduce construction risks and build quickly. This helped us move into our house in half a year.
