my favourite château in winter and summer!

by Sharon Santoni

I have already told you about the Château de Miserey, just 3 minutes from our home and famous for it’s wonderful collection of roses and the kindness of its owners.  Today I dropped by to say hello and ask if I could take some pictures of the grounds in the snow.

I wandered around the park alone, no other footprints visible except for those of the rabbit, deer and fox that call the château theirs.

Since I have often taken photos here, I inevitably have summer versions of today’s shots, I though you’d find it fun to compare!

My favourite view in any season, as you come back from the rose gardens you can see the whole property including the church and outbuildings.

OH, a priviledged moment, indeed. How truly lovely!!!

The brick "gateway" that leads to what looks to be leading to nowhereee stirred up Jane Austen in my head when Mr. Darcy's Aunt, Lady Katherine de Burgh came to visit Elizabeth Bennett. She rudely says (my words, trying to remember):

"There seems to be a particular kind of wilderness in the back of this property. I would be obliged, Miss Bennett. if you would take a turn in it with me."

Just what she may have seen. At least in my mind's eye.

Love the post, tres bien!

Absolutely, we would love to come and visit with you, Sharon. How often do I get to walk around the grounds of a French chateau these days? 😉 The closest "Chateau" is a winery [Chateau Ste Michelle] and I believe the main building dates back to the 1980s 😉 Enjoy the snow… Veronique (French Girl in Seattle)

C'est parfait à chaque saison, l'hiver ou l'été. Il a l'air plus accueillant en été, je crois, mais l'air mystérieux d'hiver est tout à fait attirant.

Sharon, your photos are getting better and better if you don't mind my saying that (I am not a photographer but live with one–heehee). I am assuming that it is just the season that I am so drawn to the winter photos right now but any time of the year, what a lieu de rêve!

I have added the French weather reports to my local weather app on my phone. When I saw you would be getting snow over the past week, I was just hoping you would be posting some of your wonderful photographs- since it was 80 degrees in CA yesterday I just couldn't wait. Sharon, you outdid yourself once again, a truly privileged moment . Stunning! Thank you, ~Jen

There is just something about the snow and its romantic quality…
especially when you don't have to drive in it much!

Oh, those lovely photos take my breath away! I can only imagine how wonderful it would be to be there in the snow surrounded by all that beauty. The summer pictures are gorgeous, also but I happen to love snow. I live in the mid south and only get small amounts like a dusting or perhaps a couple of inches of snow each winter. I would be so honored if you would show this beautiful chateau at my "Your Cozy Home Party". It started tonight at 8 pm and ends Thursday at 10 pm EST. I know others would love to visit your blog to see this wonderful place. I will cross my fingers and hope you can come.——-Shannon

Sometimes in the depth of winter, we forget the landscape of summer. Thanks for reminding us that things are beautiful at any time of the year. How lucky for you to have such a treasure close by.

Lovely photographs, as usual, Sharon. Your posting reminded me of one of my favorite, off-the-cuff, deeply funny (in a distinctly British way) remarks made by a British expatriate in France.

I suppose you'll know that there's a quite-similarly named (and, for that matter, similar in appearance) "Chateau de Missery" in Burgundy. The owners (Patricia and Phillip Hawkes, who've for many years made a fine business of buying and selling chateaus) bought Missery for themselves in 1979, having see it ten years previously without being able to buy it at that time. It suddenly became available JUST as the Hawkes were on the verge of settling on the chateau d'Yvil (in your Normandy, actually). The Hawkes joyfully canceled the Normandy arrangement, bought Missery, and have lived there happily ever since.

According to Patricia (and this witticism makes NO sense to a Frenchman; trust me, I told Herve, and he just blinked and asked "What's 'funny' about that?"): "We always say that we were delivered from Yvil and brought into Missery".

The joke probably doesn't "work", either, for folks who've so perfected their French accents as to forget how those names are pronounced by most of us.

Thanks again for the lovely photographs

Level Best as Ever,
David Terry
