my favourite part of paris

by Sharon Santoni
Le Marais…. I even love the name….. le Marais is an old part of Paris, rich in history and beautiful architecture.   Within a stone’s throw of Notre Dame, and the Pompidou centre, the Marais includes the stunning Place des Vosges, the luxuriant Musee Carnavalet and a multitude of little restaurants and truly Parisian food stores and markets.

My favourite restaurant here is Le Dome du Marais, created from the an old auction house.  These walls would have many stories to tell!

The stunning Musée Carnavlet tells the history of Paris.  It’s home today is in two beautiful 18th century ‘hotels particuliers’ that frame a traditional French parterre garden.

And if you would like to imagine what it looked like 70 years ago, then I highly recommend this beautiful book.     “I remember the Marais”

I ADORE that area too – lucky to have visited this time last year and stayed in Rue Des Achives. x

Didn't have the chance to fully explore it. We only stopped in at the Jewish Memorial. This gives me a reason to go back. (As if I need one!)

And I also read somewhere that the old architecture of Le Marais remained untouched, whereas in the rest of Paris, old buildings got torn down to make room for Haussmann buildings.

We stayed there on our trip to Paris 5 years ago, and I loved the area. I really wanted to visit the canal St. Martin but our hotel told us there were too many sans-abris and that it wasn't safe. I wish I had not listened to him. Next time, for sure!

Considering the word marais means swamp, it's certainly a beautiful area. Perhaps it was swampy in earlier times. I love the Place du Vosges.

Sharon, I love the Marais, too. We stayed in a friend's apartment there a couple falls ago and it was so fun to make our home in that neighborhood. Haven't been to Le Dome du Marais, though. Something to look forward to for the next trip! XO

Ah, le Marais… My old hunting grounds. I was a lucky girl, once: My university was just around the corner from la Place des Vosges, so naturally, many students headed to the beautiful garden to cram for exams 🙂 It did not suck… I knew many restaurants and cafes in the area. It has not changed one bit. Thank you for the book recommendation. I may add it to my Christmas wish list (my MIL is coming to visit and she will be happy to act as a special courrier 🙂 Veronique (French Girl in Seattle)

I'm hoping my next trip is very, very soon. It's been two years since I've been in Paris. That's two years too long.

Thanks for the travel advice!

Hello Sharon, I love your photos of Paris. I was one week in Paris, but it´s 21 years ago, it was my second holiday with my husband. And it was so romantic. I think, Paris was and is the most romantic city in the world! Right? Best wishes!

I've been reading you all along but haven't been able to leave comments to all of your beautiful posts because of a hand injury, which makes keyboarding painful. I loved the flowers with the blueware dishes from 'way earlier this month, Ghetto with the lovely tote bag, the garden tables with pink umbrellas matching pink flowers growing in the foreground and now, this glimpse of a Paris of which I'm unacquainted; can't wait to read more about it. Thank you, and I just wanted to say also what a relief it must be to know your noble horse is faring so much better. Best of luck!

One of my favorite areas of Paris! I recommend visiting on a Sumday. Whereas other parts of Paris shut down on Sumday, the Marais is vibrant with cafés, restaurants and shops! The Musee Carnavelet and the Place des Vosges are not to be missed!

I just returned home from a three week trip to France. I spent two weeks bicycling and then stayed a week in Paris in the Marais. I always stay there because it is so convenient to everything, and since my Paris week was solo (hubby went home for work), I felt safe.

we have a beautiful home on Italy’s Amalfi Coast…maybe we could trade one day. I too love to cook and travel. Paris is my favorite place. But Italy is in my Heart and I love the food in the South more than any other food…anywhere. We can see Capri from our Garden. Che Bella…

Arrivederci, Barbara
