my favourite christmas gift and why our food is round!

by Sharon Santoni
[blank]So what was your favourite gift among the goodies I’m sure you received for Christmas?
Mine was small, shiny and round with a hole in the middle
 …. and no, I don’t mean a diamond ring …
Among the gifts in my stocking this year were these baking moulds, and ever since nearly everything that we eat is … round![blank]

[blank]I am experimenting rather than following recipes, and this week we have eaten individual potato bakes – yummy! [blank]

[blank]individual apple and almond crumbles (so sorry about the dreadful picture, they disappeared so fast that I couldn’t even get the camera focussed!![blank]
[blank]the most delicious blueberry cheesecakes AH!  to die for – really!!!.   I simply broke spicy almond biscuits over the base of the mould, then sprinkled some frozen blueberries, then covered the base with my normal cheesecake mix[blank]
[blank]for lunch today I made some courgette or zucchini bakes[blank]
[blank]and finally some little tiramisu, not yet un-moulded,  and decorated with Y-U-M-M-Y …. hey, this is the country, we get our kicks where and when we can![blank]

[blank]so that is what is happening in this house as the christmas school break draws to a close.

I love school holidays, always have done, and baking for the family is just a natural part of the fun.
But now its your turn to tell … what was your favourite gift, and what have you been cooking?![blank]

Oh Dear!
Wishing you and your beloved a Happy new Year first, than- I cannot beleive- I got 12 pcs of the same rings ( first thing was a cheesecake to make for one of the weekdays between Xmas and New Year)First I made a spongecake cut in form by the ring then the fresh cheesecream and strawberries from own summer collecting and topped by almond sticks. Yummy, Santa was a bit selfish this year. Love from the muddy Great Plain in Hungary Dorka http://www.dorottyaudva.rco.hu

Some time ago I purchased some pricey au gratins, a bit of a splurge but they are so simply beautiful. I understand the urge, everything was au gratin for a while! My Christmas was about fingers, new gloves, all divine leather, perfectly fit and stitched. I almost hate to wear them and distort the form. Your round presentations are lovely, very gourmet:)

I need to share this post with my hubs..I bought him some of these a while back and he never uses them. They just make food a little more special!

Your meals look divine. I loved baking over the holidays but now it's time to stop indulging in the goodies and get back on a health kick, for me. My favorite gift was a Moravian Star pendant light my daughter gave me, and art supplies from my son… Happy New Year Sharon!

Isn't it funny how something so small can be your favorite thing? I've made an apple crumb pie and want to make an apple cobbler (comfort food for sure). On New Year's Day, I made some Italian soup with andouille sausage, zucchini, squash, garbanzo beans, tomatoes and onions. I've been a baking and cooking mood lately. 🙂

Oh, I love these. I'd be cooking everything "in the round" too.

I have a hard time choosing a favourite gift – although I did receive a lovely strand of pearls that I'm enjoying.

Thanks for the good ideas. I have had some rounds like yours for years, but I never thought to cook or bake with them….I use mine to pack with already cooked foods in order to make a round stack for presentation. I think I'll make your blueberry cream cheese dessert, it looks good!

I've been roasting root vegetables(parsnips, turnips, fresh beets, onions and garlic). My daughter got me started and now I make them every chance I get. Where have fresh beets been all my life and why didn't I know how wonderful they are?(Sigh) Favorite Christmas gift are tickets to the orchestra.

YUM YUM YUM!!! Looks like you have been having a great time with your cooking "in the round"!! Looks delicious! I had a favorite food for Christmas that was round….it was a puff pastry encrusted brie with cranberries, brown sugar, and pecans atop the brie before you enclose it with the puff pastry. Happy cooking and thanks for sharing!

My favorite gift was spending the entire week with my husband and 3 boys at home without stressing about work since the office was closed! And we did lots of cooking together but our favorite recipe was for a koulibiac – salmon in pastry – which I didn't think they would eat. They gobbled it up and now I have another recipe for family dinners! Now I'm cooking all healthy, low fat!

Love the roundness! I got a tiny little springform pan to make my famous goat cheese – sundried tomato – basil pesto torte in. I can't wait to try it out!

Dear Sharon & Readers,

My good guess is that you would really enjoy Stephane Reynaud's very useful and enjoyable book "Terrine" (2010, I think). He's the same fellow who published the wildly popular "Pork & Sons". From the publisher: "…Stéphane Reynaud hails from a family of butchers in the Ardèche region of France, and his recipes reflect a rustic purity and simplicity all too rare in the food world. In TERRINE, he describes why he wanted to write a cookbook dedicated to the subject, ''Classic meat, poultry and game terrines can be rustic or sophisticated, luxurious or thrifty. In my native Ardèche, where the back of my family s butcher shop was my playroom, I was brought up eating homemade terrine everyday. My grandparents kitchen reflected their working life, and meat terrines of all types were always on the menu.'' Reynaud felt that he was uniquely qualified to write a cookbook that would teach today's home cooks how to master this ancient French cooking technique.

TERRINE features an assortment of mouthwatering recipes that take the classic dish to uncharted territory, including Gorgonzola, Mascarpone and Nut Terrine; Terrine of Baby Leeks; Crab and Smoked Salmon Terrine; Oxtail and Red Wine Terrine; Foie Gras and Artichoke Terrine; Wild Boar Terrine with Blackcurrants; Rabbit Rillettes; Milk Chocolate Crêpe Terrine; Chestnut, Meringue and Chantilly Terrine; Strawberry and Fresh Mint Terrine; Coffee Terrine and many other delectable creations. Also provided are recipes for a variety of sauces and garnishes such as Chive and Shallot Cream, Pickled Vegetables and homemade Mango Chutney to accompany the main dishes. A handy glossary of terms is included in the back of the book…."

Happy New Year,

David Terry

And speaking of round, it makes food so inviting to eat or try for the first time.
All your yummy inspiring foods, and desserts invite me to start making more roundness to my food designing.
I always enjoy my visit to your beautiful blog home, you inspire the best.

Happy New Year to You, Sharon!

Your blog is the best "thing" I discovered in 2012! Truly!

As I've written before, I start every day reading it with my coffee in hand, here in Odessa – the "horse country" – north of Tampa, FL.

Now I want these rounds as well -hopefully I can find them at Williams & Sonoma.

Aside of being with my parents, my sisters, and their 13 children for Christmas, my best gift is a pair of tickets to see Gino Vannelli later this month in Orlando with one of my sisters! His music was competitively blasted from three different stereos back in the 70's and 80's in our house while we were growing up, so I am really looking forward to re-living our adolescent youth as we sing along like school-girls. 🙂

Enjoy the rest of your school holiday with your family!

Bonne Année!

I'd love to have the recipe for the potato bake and zucchini bake… I'll bet both are wonderfully simple and delicious! Your next project should be a French Country cookbook… with your beautiful photography, and inspiring recipes and table settings.

My favorite gifts were all food related this year (of course). And some beautiful special bottles of wine from friends for my birthday that I would never have bought for myself.

I love any molds or tart pans like yours………..I got a nice Staub metallic big cocotte with a rooster handle for my bday from Monsieur Henri, and I love it!
