the french garden deck chair

by Sharon Santoni

[blank]The sun and the summer warmth are now here to stay for a few months in Normandy, and of course we get out our deck chairs.

I love these canvas chairs, scattered around the garden, in the shade of a tree, or beyond the terrace, single or in groups.  Even if I am too busy to spend much time sitting down in them, their mere presence makes life feel slower and more relaxed.

I am not disciplined enough to put the chairs away each evening, and by the end of the season the fabric is ready for renewal.

Here comes the quandry … which fabric to use.  In the past I have done white, bold stripes, subtle stripes, flowers and even toile de jouy.  But this year I cannot decide.

The look I prefer is that of the vintage chairs I sometimes find with their original covering.  Subtle faded stripes that just seem to fit right in to our garden and lifestyle.[blank]

[blank]So tell me, if you were me, what would you choose?[blank]
[blank]bright and beautiful stripes from Toile du Soleil?[blank]
[blank]sweet toile de Jouy?[blank]
[blank]or a happy mix of flowers and stripes?[blank]

[blank]or would you do like I have done so often, and wait for that perfect vintage chair to call your name in a fair one Sunday morning?  :)[blank]

[blank]Hope you are enjoying a wonderful weekend and that you too,
enjoy some quiet time in a deck chair[blank]

I think the subtle colours wold look wonderful in your garden!!
Just thinking about it makes me yearn for another summer like we have just had
Just watched 2 young teams play a healthy fast game of rugby. I thought we had the most wonderful captain a real scholar and a gentleman – then this last week have watched YOUR captain – he is to die for!!! Imagine those two guys chucking a footie around your gardens!! You wouldn't care what colour the chairs were then cos nobody would be looking at them!!!

How nice coincidentially having the same task so far away from each other on the very end of the Plain here I just fitted the new covers for the deck chairs for the new season. As in the guest house each person has his own colour – ie. basic coulours dark blue-red-green-yellow towels bedcovers etc. The deck chairs got this year the same different striped canvas.I digged all the shops this winter to find the meterware in the prefered colours.Happy to start the season (have extra for the next too)
I do not have to suffer flood here however alongside the river Danube over 50thousand people are in highest danger these days! Please think of them all.

I love toile' but for the outside I like the stripes. Stripes scream summer! They remind of the lawn chairs of my childhood. Whatever fabric you select may you enjoy many moments of summer pleasure.

Bonjour Sharon. I think I would do a combination of all the bright, striped fabrics. They are so cheerful! Happy summer in Normandy. Veronique (French Girl in Seattle)

I'm traditional, so I'd go for the toile.

Your deck chairs are so beautiful in their soft colors, like a group of old friends gathered for a gentle afternoon's gossip under the trees. The stripes are more in keeping with their age and temperament, I think. Thanks for such evocative images.

The deckchair with canopy and footstool is a great idea, I haven't seen one like that before. I would love to see it covered in plain cream canvas like in your last photo, modern country style. Hope you are enjoying the sunny weather this weekend, and that you get a chance to sit in one of deckchairs for a while.

As much as I like color, stripes, plaids, florals, toile, the neutral linen color in the last photo is appealing to me right now.

I gotta go with toile. At first I thought, stripes! But the photo of the red toile sold me.

Hi Sharon …I just love those bold Toile-de-Soleil stripes. With a teeny bit of natural summer fade they would be the perfect choice.

The pressure of choosing… I would have a mix of flowers and stripes, it's hard to choose just one style. As usual you present such beautiful things… Enjoy your weekend. Regards Esther from Sydney.

I'd have a mixture of stripes and flowers, then you could chose your seat according to your mood, after all we all have 'stripes or flowers moods' don't we, well I do!

And if the colours complemented each other then the stripes would look like the back of a flowery quilt, and look rather clever, does that make sense?

Hi Sharon: I love the last pic with the neutral colors. I think they would blend in beautifully with the exterior color of your home and all the colorful flowers you have. Let all of nature be your real pop of color!

Hi Sharon, I love your chairs and garden. All of your considerations are beautiful. Personally, I am a toile girl. However, if you are looking for something totally unique and different, have you ever checked out barkcloth. It is available mostly on Ebay. It is a fabric from somewhere around the 1940's-1960's. The real thing is usually a thicker type fabric with a nubby texture, however, soft. The prints and colors are amazing with a vibrant assortment. You could perhaps cover half of your chairs with one selection and the other half with something complimentary. It can be a bit pricey. Although there are great deals to be found as well. You have to keep checking back. I have seen it sold in bolts and by the yard. I'ts worth a look. In the end please let us know what you decide. Happy looking/hunting/shoping!!! Janet

I like muted and natural colors myself. The bold stripes remind me of Provence.

You know? In this case I cannot decide either! Stripes remember me the beach, and it is not the case. Toile de Jouy remember me a cozy bedroom I had once, what about tiny flowers (to me, big ones choke the presence of the real flowers in your garden)? Or a plain neutral color like white or cream? Visually its pops out in the middle of the green garden. I like that!

Bonjour. I like the stripes, but the flowers appeal to me today. And if somebody spills something on them, it won't show up as bad.

They are all beautiful, and I can't wait to see your final choice.

I do like the floral, but they are all very nice.
In your blog header photo I see the roses are so beautiful and am wondering what type of vine you have growing in front of your home, so very lovely.

Adore the simplicity of the plain canvas in your last image! But they are all delightful. Our garden in Maine in the U.S. has Adirondack chairs, but we see this type of deck chair on the beaches of Martha's Vineyard and Cape Cod. Love them!
