paris step by step …. 1st arrondissement

by Sharon Santoni

Summer is on its way and many of us will find ourselves in Paris …. on holiday, on business, shopping, dreaming …..

tuileriesThere is a good metro system in Paris, but it’s way better to stay overground!  Walk wherever possible, catch a bus, climb on to the river bus, use a bike.  This is the only way to discover Paris’s little secrets … a doorway left ajar, an inviting little bistro, the changing colours as clouds make way for sunshine.

Paris is divided into twenty arrondissements, each with their own specific atmosphere, their highs and lows.  Over the next twenty weekends, I shall walk you around Paris, sharing my favourites in each arrondissement.  Not too many words, but plenty of images and addresses to jot down for your next visit … I hope you will enjoy.

The First Arrondissement runs along the river encompassing the Jardins des Tuileries as far as the Ile de la Cité, and back ‘inland’ as far as the place Vendome.

Museums – the Louvre !  Of course!  How could I not mention the Louvre?  I love the pyramid  ….. but I have a confession to make, this is not my favourite museum in Paris.  It is so big that it takes forever to get to the bit that really interests you …   in this part of Paris I prefer the Museum of Decorative Arts ……

Panorama_musee_des_arts_decoratifs …..where to stay …  If you want a palace hotel with all the special attention and luxurious trimmings (and believe me it is divine!) then book yourself into Le Meurice …..

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

….. if you like great design but prefer something a little smaller take a look at the Hotel Therese …..

grand_salon

…… speaking of design, you won’t be far from Colette the best known concept store in Paris, and one you have to visit to be in on the latest trends ……

colette 1

…..for more traditional shopping … for French chic at its best then stick to the Faubourg St Honoré and wander from Hermes to Yves Saint Laurent, to Chanel to Cartier to Longchamp …. need I say more?! ……

120372_devanture-de-la-boutique-hermes-rue-du-faubourg-saint-honore-a-paris-le-25-octobre-2010

…… Want to spoil yourself … head to the place Vendome for the jewellers and the beautiful column recounting Napoleons victories ……

place-vendome-paris-900

….if you love to buy kitchen stuff then you must not miss  Dehillerin  , heaven on earth for lovers of copper and those who need another pastry cutter or balloon whisk ……

dehillerin

…..want to do feel Parisian – then head to the quai de la Megisserie and watch families pick out plants and pets to take home and cherish ……

megisserie

…..do you like the theatre, then if you’re up to a play in French, soak up the atmosphere in the 18th century Comedie Francaise …..

comedie-francaise-900

Voila!   A few suggestions for you.  Next week I shall walk you around the 2nd arrondissement.  You are welcome to add your own suggestions in the comments below.

Carte-Paris (Arrondissement)

If you missed them, here are my step-by-steps around the other arrondissements so far:

1st arrondissement2nd arrondissement; 3rd arrondissement;   4th  arrondissement;            5th arrondissement6th arrondissement  7th arrondissement;   8th arrondissement;   9th arrondissement

Thank-you Sharon for this ! What a wonderful idea and valuable information for our first trip to France and Paris at the end of April. We, like many tourists I assume, are staying in the 6th arrondissement.because it seemed more touristy for starters and for our first time we thought that was OK. We rented and apartment and know that the best way to see Paris for the week is to walk and walk and walk. I am certainly excited and looking forward to your future posts on the other areas and thank-you so much for your beautiful postings everyday !

Love this Sharon! I love that city so much but won’t be able to visit for several years — too many weddings to pay for — but thanks so much for helping me pretend!

Sharon,
Here is an odd sort of question.
Let’s pretend we want to buy a lot of cooking goodies…but only the one little suitcase.
Will the stores (any of them) ship them home for us?? I realize it would be pricey, but far cheaper than an extra suitcase….

Great idea! I too will look forward to it.
I think you have hit on a perfect concept. Like mentioned earlier this idea would be great for other areas of France, as I for one would like your input and pictures. I can already see this as a coffee table picture book, “Travel with Sharon in Paris”
Have a great weekend!

We will be staying in the 9th Arrondissement. I am thankful for you sharing of your passion for Paris. You and your enticing blog have allowed me think of nothing else for the past two years! Merci!
