design and creation in Normandy – Fafa, working with wood

by Sharon Santoni

Fafa is the friend of a friend: a gentle giant, an artist who has magic in his hands … he can transform the old and ugly into the refreshed and beautiful; he understands whimsy;  there is poetry in his creations.

His workshop is in the Perche, just next door to Normandy, and besides selling from home, he also sells in a couple of chic little designer boutiques, scattered across France.

His creations are sturdy and resistant, his chairs can be left outside where they turn a lovely shade of silver grey.    The most roughly hewn wooden tables become graceful and modern, his proportions are right, his furniture ideal for everyday life.

Fafa is kindness and gentleness incarnate, and his natural modesty means that he is still amazed to see his creations travel around the world to new homes in far away countries.

I love the new twist he gives to hunting trophies, made from wood, and accessorised with  his brocante finds, such as the shoe-form ears, and the kitchen spoon tongues.

All of Fafa’s production is eco-friendly; he re-purposes the most surprising elements.   His creations make people smile, and that is a very special gift.

If you would like to contact Fafa, you can visit his site, HERE and drop him a line.  He ships worldwide and also makes to order.

Hi Sharon,
I have such appreciation for artisans like this and their creative pursuits. I can envision an adorable little boys room with that little car, the tree and a whimsical cows had. Love it! Thanks for sharing 🙂 Hope you and your family are well!

This is absolutely charming Sharon. Fafa does look like a very gentle giant & his way with wood is fascinating. I did peek at his website although your photos do give a better depiction of what he does. Timeless, timeworn, whimsical & rustic looking pieces. Thank you for sharing this.

Oh, those are wonderful! The last one, the fuzzy-headed cow, especially makes me laugh. Thanks for telling us about Fafa.

All of these things are so jaw droppingly beautiful thank you for sharing them. I wonder if they could travel all the way to New Zealand?! I love the handmade, made-with-love look of these pieces, I am sure they’d be delightful to have in your home. 🙂
