authentic patina

by Sharon Santoni
You may be surprised to learn how many large family homes there are in France, practically uninhabited, untouched for years but floating timelessly under the spell of an authentic patina.
I have seen a couple of homes that look a lot like these pictures, rows of near empty ‘salons’ with just a couple of rooms near the kitchen, furnished and heated for day to day living.
Time-worn, faded, scruffy, on it’s way out …. call it what you will, this weathered finish has attracted decorators for years, inspired designers and painters to reproduce shabby furniture or aged patinas on walls.

Maybe today that is the role they have to play, to inspire and remind …
wishing you all a happy and inspiring weekend

This is proof that beauty is not perfect. All of the spaces have beautiful bones.

What I wouldn't give had the greying timber in the bedrooms upstairs remained grey, the original old oak floors left alone (the carpenter had said there were too may "gaps"), the original grey concrete floors downstairs not tiled over in cheap terracotta tile, and the original deep farmhouse sink not replaced by the "gold-updated one from the 1980's" 🙁 . Had these items just been left alone this beautiful old farmhouse (1835) could have kept her authentic soul along with her patina…love your photos.

Oh my, oh my, oh my! I have always wanted to see the inside of some of the beautiful, abandoned chateaux. This made me dream like you can't imagine. I would move right in. Bats and all.

Bon weekend et un grand merci!

So lovely, there is nothing I love more than character and patina in a beautiful old home — it reflects the loves and lives that have taken place there over the years. Our home is new, new, new, as are many in the Seattle area but I try to bring in a little of that weathered feel with carefully chosen vintage pieces and fabrics. Would love to have an old, French beauty someday, though…

Stunning reminders of the beauties of times past. Each time I see a lovely home like these sitting empty I always imagine what I would do with it if it were mine. Beautiful thoughts, Sharon….

Those empty rooms stand poignant, full of both loss and potential. How sad to think of them left uninhabited. But the heating bills would be atrocious! It would be fun to turn one into a B & B type hotel.

I agree,we are looking at homes in the Auvergne region and there are so many beautiful old madams(homes) sitting waiting for someone to fall in love with them again. Awesome post!!My favorite blog by far.

Ahh ADORE the look! Still trying to find a way of combining modern creature comforts with the patina of the ages. I sympathise with La Bergère Basque though. The architect tried to dissuade me from redoing the ceilings of our house in Provence in the traditional way. The only thing I capitulated on was recovering the stone walls INSIDE for efficient insulation. But the OUTSIDE was sooo NOT getting a hideous 'crépi' for insulation's sake. At least inside I could put a beautiful satin finish layer of 'la chaux.'

Beautiful and always the prettiest when shown in a beautiful chateau in France!! Beauty to me, is always far more intereseting when its not flawless and shiny but rather textured and slightly flawed….Have a beautiful weekend!

Somehow seeing the newspapers pasted to the walls in that third photograph just saddens me. There's an interesting and I would guess poignant story there. Thanks for sharing these patina views.
