a little comfort food and a new giveaway draw

by Sharon Santoni

We all need a little comfort now and again, and everybody will at some point find themselves in the role of comfort giver.

Some people talk comfort, some cuddle comfort, some sing comfort, some wag-their-tail comfort …. and some turn to a little baking.

[white]Here it is cold, everyone is busy, and although we sit down together to share our meals, there doesn’t always seem to be time in the day to  really ‘check-in’ on everyone.    It’s at moments like these that the sweet smell of a cake, or a tart, or cookies wafting from the kitchen and through the house is what seems to work the best.[white]

“We are here, we are together, we are caring for each other”  [white]

who says food can’t talk![white]

Apple tarts aside, I have to tell you that the giveaway has been re-drawn, since the first winner never showed up.   I am happy to tell you that the winner is now:[white]

Jennifer Saunders who runs a shop called Twig in Richmond VA.

Congratulations Jennifer, I’m sending you an email to tell you the good news!

I love your blog,Sharon. Your house looks so inviting and you seem to have the perfect lifestyle.
The apple tarts look delicious. Funnily enough I too was making an apple desert cake this afternoon up here on the East coast of Scotland with wind howling and driving rain and sleet! Comfort food certainly needed here!
Sadly you didn’t give your recipe…..
Enjoy your evening!

Hi Sharon, you are so talented in every way, your food looks delish and your style, well I envy and love!
Today is my Sister’s birthday and I was hoping when I open this site to find the apple dessert recipe for her birthday dinner 🙁
Very sad in Florida.

Sorry Linda and Diana, It seemed too simple to write out! I simply used some flaky pastry I already had, cut it into rounds, sprinkled with sugar. Peeled and sliced my apples and arranged them on the pastry, sprinkled more sugar then a line or heart of pastry for decoration. Into a hot oven until they are golden and bubbling! To avoid the tarts spreading out over the baking sheet I cooked them inside little loose-bottomed moulds …E.A.S.Y.!!!

Your food always looks so scrumptious. My Mom used to take the scraps of her pie dough and sprinkle it with cream and dust with sugar, and sometimes a little cinnamon then bake them crisp. Your tart reminds me of those. We used to hang out in the kitchen and anxiously wait for them to get done. We like the pie, but we loved the little crisps.

Lately I have had difficulty with my pastry. It is rubbish! Cannot figure out what’s going on. The most wonderful pastry that I have ever had was at the Louvre (and quite frankly anywhere in France). Do you recommend a recipe? Yes, I too am completely jealous of Jennifer and luv luv luv the blog:). Ty, Marsh Jane

Oh, congratulations to Jennifer de la Saunders. I found her comments interesting and actually went to her shop’s website; it’s really intriguing. If I lived in de la Richmond (it’s only 3 hours north of my front porch), I’d go there. I never know what to buy for my smart, female friends, so I go to a similar shop in de la Durham called “Cozy”. Each year around this time, I hand my debit-card to the two smart&stylish& very-amusing women who own it; I describe each friend for whom I’m buying a Christmas present, and I let the owners choose the presents. This ALWAYS works out for the best.

By the way….doesn’t everyone agree with me that EVERYTHING sounds better/fancier if you preface it with a “de la”????? I first learned French at my small-town,public high school, in the mountains of East Tennessee, from Mlle. “Cookie” McKinney (she also coached the cheerleaders). Like Chaucer’s prioress (google her), I’ve retained my original (to say the very least) accent when it comes to speaking French.

Herve (for those who don’t know, my partner’s French) consistently derives amusement from American waiters who, having served you your prime-rib or some similar cut of meat, sincerely ask the customer “And would you like some au jus on that?”…….

I gather “Twig” is much the same sort of shop.

Hello Sharon,
Thanks for your recipe for your simply elegant tart…sometimes the conjoining of the simplest and most elemental ingredients can taste the best and this one certainly is a winner! In regard to your pastry recipe, it brought back lots of memories of my childhood and my time spent with my Granny Josey. My first recollection of working with her pastry was when I was about 4 years old…she loved to do pies and I was always trailing her around her kitchen watching her every move. One day she presented me with my own child sized set of pie tins and a small rolling pin so that I could create miniature cinnamon rolls and tarts from her pie crust recipe sized just for me. I will never forget the first time that my little creations came out of the oven for the first time! I was so proud and happy to actually create something in the kitchen! To this day I credit my Granny Jo for instilling me with the love to cook. Our “kitchen times” continued on for many many years as she lived to be the ripe old age of 102! When she passed on, I inherited all her treasured recipe books, however I discovered that many of her best recipes were never written down. Thank goodness I had the foresight to record many of her favorites in writing as we worked together. My grandparents immigrated from Czechoslovakia to America (Iowa) in the 1890s when they were very small children, so my memories of both of them are rich indeed. On my father’s side, my other grandparents had a very different background… they came from Scotland to the colonies in the 1740s and fought as patriots in the Revolutionary War for American independence from the English crown. Another story…another time…another very different food experience!

Undeniably believe that which you said. Your favorite reason seemed to be on the right web design the easiest thing to be aware of.
I say to you, I definitely get irked while people consider worries that
they plainly don’t know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top and defined out the whole thing without having side
effect , people can take a signal. Will likely be back to get more.
Thanks
