red peonies, roses and old silver teapots …

by Sharon Santoni

If you have seen my picture flowers before, you’ll know that I often like to share a few blooms between several jars or bottles or vases …. and today I did the same thing but with old silver teapots.

The first peonies are blooming here and they are the deep red, rahter ordinary variety – I feel criminal calling a peony ordinary, but you know what I mean.

The red can be rather a hard colour, so I teamed them with the first roses in the garden, also and quite conveniently deep crimson, and then brought in some bronze fennel, some pink hawthorn and a few aquilegia.

Foliage is provided by new wisteria leaves, before they turn completely green, and that black shrub whose name I have forgotten (sambuco .. sambucus ?…) that was planted here on your, dear reader, advice

It has been raining constantly all week, and the peonies would not have lasted very long outside, so bringing them in and enjoying them for the week in these silver pots seemed like a good idea.

Voila!  A few flowers to get your week off to a fragrant start.  Thank you for reading me.

The only problem with peonies is they should have a longer season. Maybe their short season is why they are so precious. As always your bouquets are fabulous.

Madonna:
I so agree with you and I also believe that is why they are so precious. I guess if they were with us longer – we might not appreciate them as much.

Enjoy spring,
Sandra

I know a garden near here, where they manage to prolong the peony season to about 3 months by having many different varieties that flower at different times. Every year I say to myself I have to note down the names …. and then I forgot … until the next year! DUH!

Sharon:
Beautiful, Beautiful! I am absolutely mad about peonies and have several. My red (Red Charm) is just about to open. The one in your photo is so wonderful – do you by chance know its name?

I’m sorry Sandra, I don’t know the names of any of my peonies. In a week or so I’ll have the giant pink flowers open, so I hope it stops raining by then!

Hot and humid in Chicago, so your beautiful flowers are very uplifting.

I love peonies for their intense color (sometimes) and also for their delicate rose-like petals! My favorite is Sarah Bernhardt.

Absolutely stunning! Peonies always remind me of my grandmother, as they were among her favorite flowers.

This looks like a painting from one of the great French painters! So abundant and beautiful!

This gorgeous bouquet is a show in itself! Together with the silver teapots it really looks like an old painting. Maybe Dutch?
The black beauty is Sambucus nigra, most probably ‘black lace’…
Best regards Christel

Sharon, your blog is the most beautiful that I have seen. I tend to look primarily at food blogs, but discovered yours on Facebook, and I am so glad that I did! Your photography is just stunning. My husband and I love all things Francaise– the culture, the food, the architecture, the language ( which, alas, we do not speak well!), the people, the markets, the parcs et jardins! We have been to France six times thus far, and have seen a bit of Normandy, Brittany, the Loire Valley, Alsace, Provence (Luberon), Lyon, the Cote d’Azure and it’s hill towns. We have spent a great deal of our time in Paris, which we love. Next time we plan a visit, we will contact you about your cottage! Looks like heaven to us!

If you want to see an out of this world red peony. Look up Red Charm – will take your breath away. I have 3 and each of them have over 35 blooms. You can purchase them from Adelman Peony Gardens in Oregon. You wouldn’t be sorry.

Very pretty, looks great in the teapot! You must have a huge flower garden, when do you find the time, with all the other projects you do?

I always read your blog….I drink my coffee and drink in your pictures, travels and stories…as I sit here in Costa Mesa, CA….dreaming of someday coming to visit.

Love your flowers…I tried to grow peonies here, most unsuccessfully….they would come up about 3 inches and die…it is too hot and dry here…..enjoy them.
