I love creating handpainted eggs for Easter decoration. Spring flowers in the house, a pretty lunch table, small bowls of chocolates from our favorite ‘chocolatier’ and of course hand painted eggs.
When my children were small I used to blow the egg shells and we’d decorate together. Painting, dyeing, stickers … you name it we did it.
And now there are no more children at home, I still love this whimsical decor. I no longer take the time to empty the egg shells; but simply use them as they are, and embrace the ephemera.
For years, I dyed the eggs using plants or vegetables to create natural colors Red cabbage makes blue, onions make yellow, beetroot makes pink, turmeric turns the eggs almost gold etc . I absolutely loved the results, but by the time the eggs were finished, the kitchen looked like a bomb had dropped!
More recently I used acrylic paints to create a floral decor. Last year I was very lucky to find naturally white or pale blue eggs, but this year I only found the beige variety. Undeterred I painted each of the eggs in one color, let them dry, and then started to create the decor.
The really wonderful thing about doing this with acrylic paints, is that if you’re not happy with the result, you can simply wash it off and start again.
I tend to work out what I want to do, practice on paper and then start painting the eggs, trying to vary the design for each. It is a very therapeutic past time, and one that can be put down, and picked up again over a couple of days, prolonging the fun.
I don’t pretend to be an artist, but I very firmly believe in the power of getting creative, as often as possible, and preferably every day. This is simply my creative touch for easter in my home. Happy Easter weekend to you all.
